Konami delivered a double dose of Metal Gear Solid news this week, upgrading the first Master Collection for Switch 2 while announcing a second volume that breaks a 16-year PlayStation exclusivity.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 received its final major update, bringing 60fps performance to Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on Nintendo Switch 2. The games previously ran at a locked 30 frames per second on the original Switch hardware, according to Vooks and Kotaku reports.
Switch 2 owners can now play both titles at 60fps in docked and portable modes, with selectable resolution options available before loading each game. The update also adds higher resolution settings for the original Metal Gear Solid, though some users report texture artifacts with the HD improvements.
Simultaneously, Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 during Sony's State of Play presentation. The State of Play showcase also featured other major announcements including a new John Wick game.
The collection includes the first-ever port of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, previously exclusive to PlayStation 3 since its 2008 release. Nintendo World Report and Gematsu confirmed the announcement.
Vol. 2 launches August 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam. The collection bundles Metal Gear Solid 4 with the HD Collection version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which supports online co-op for 2 to 4 players and competitive versus modes for up to six players.
A bonus inclusion makes the package particularly notable for Nintendo fans: Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, the 2000 Game Boy Color title that never received a modern re-release. Nintendo Wire described it as "possibly the most overlooked game in the series" despite its non-canon status.
Physical editions will be available for both Switch platforms, with Switch 2 receiving a Game Key Card format. The announcement comes as the original Master Collection receives a 30 percent discount across digital storefronts.
Konami's dual announcements address longstanding fan complaints about the Switch version's performance limitations while finally liberating Metal Gear Solid 4 from PlayStation 3 hardware. The 2008 title has remained trapped on Sony's aging console despite numerous franchise re-releases over the past decade.
Peace Walker's inclusion continues the trend of bringing portable Metal Gear titles to home consoles, following its previous appearance in the HD Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Its six-player online functionality remains intact for the new release.
The Master Collection Vol. 1 update represents Konami's final performance fix for the compilation, bringing Switch 2 performance in line with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Button mapping options were also added alongside the frame rate improvements.
Metal Gear Solid 4's arrival on non-PlayStation platforms marks a significant shift for Konami's preservation efforts. The game's complex architecture, including its real-time install system and PlayStation Network integration, presented technical hurdles that kept it confined to PS3 for 18 years.
Both collections will be available separately, with Vol. 2 priced at standard retail levels.
That project remains in development alongside these archival releases.
Vol. 2 launches August 27, 2026 across all announced platforms. The updated Vol. 1 is available now with its 30 percent discount active through the end of February.
