Free-tier users across the United States now have access to Google's personalized AI assistant capabilities through three key platforms. The company announced today that Personal Intelligence, previously exclusive to paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers since its January debut, expands to all US consumers through AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome.
Personal Intelligence connects directly to a user's Google ecosystem including Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Drive, YouTube, Search history and Maps data. This integration allows Gemini AI responses to incorporate personal context automatically without requiring manual prompt adjustments.
For example, asking for tech troubleshooting could generate specific guidance based on device purchase receipts stored in Gmail. The feature operates as an opt-in service available exclusively for personal Google accounts rather than Workspace business or education users.
Once activated through account settings menu options labeled "Personal Intelligence," users grant permission for their connected apps data usage while maintaining control over which services participate. The feature is opt-in and off by default, and Google notes that Gemini does not train directly on Gmail inboxes or Photos libraries, only prompts and model responses are used for training.
Google demonstrated several practical applications during today's announcement. Shopping recommendations can reference past purchases like specific sneaker brands when suggesting matching accessories.
Travel planning queries might incorporate flight details from Gmail alongside restaurant preferences from Maps history and dietary restrictions noted elsewhere within a user's profile.
Technical support scenarios show particular promise according to internal testing examples shared by engineers involved with development efforts earlier this year. Asking about refrigerator issues could trigger diagnostic suggestions referencing exact model information extracted automatically from digital receipts rather than requiring manual specification during conversation exchanges.
This expansion arrives as competition intensifies within personalized assistant markets where Apple plans similar functionality updates for Siri later this calendar year according to multiple industry reports published throughout recent months.
