A delayed Nintendo Switch 2 port of FromSoftware's acclaimed action RPG has emerged from its troubled development with substantially improved performance, according to hands-on previews from this week's Game Developers Conference.
Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, originally announced alongside the Switch 2 reveal in April 2025, was pushed back from an October 2025 release to focus on optimization work. Early builds reportedly suffered from severe performance issues, with frame rates dropping as low as 15 FPS in handheld mode during initial demonstrations.
The newly optimized version shown at GDC now maintains a stable 30 FPS across both handheld and docked modes, according to multiple outlets that tested the 15-minute demo. While not reaching the 60 FPS target of other platforms, the improved consistency addresses previous criticisms about playability on Nintendo's hybrid hardware.
Visual quality appears largely intact despite the portable constraints. Previewers noted the Lands Between retains its atmospheric grandeur on Switch 2 screens, with environmental detail and color palette comparable to other console versions running at lower resolutions.
FromSoftware has added exclusive content for this release, including a new Heavy Knight starting class designed specifically for Switch 2 players. The class features distinct combat mechanics that differentiate it from existing options in the base game.
Performance improvements follow a pattern seen with other demanding titles on portable hardware. Linux-based systems like Steam Deck previously demonstrated how proper optimization could make Elden Ring playable on lower-powered devices through pre-compiled shaders and API translation layers.
No official release date has been announced since the delay confirmation last year. Bandai Namco representatives at GDC declined to provide updated timing beyond confirming development continues toward a 2026 launch window.
