Apple's fourth iOS 26.4 beta delivers eight new emoji alongside cross-platform encrypted messaging, refining both visual communication and security infrastructure in one update. The developer build released this week includes Unicode Consortium-approved symbols like Distorted Face and Hairy Creature alongside end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations with Android devices.

The emoji additions represent Apple's implementation of Unicode 15.1 characters proposed in 2024, now appearing in iOS for the first time. Alongside Distorted Face and Hairy Creature (which resembles Bigfoot), users gain symbols for Fight Cloud, Ballet Dancer, Orca, Landslide, Trombone, and Treasure Chest.

These join 163 total new emoji designs added to Apple's keyboard throughout iOS 26 development.

Cross-platform RCS encryption marks a significant security upgrade for iPhone-to-Android messaging. Messages sent between platforms will display a lock icon when protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring only sender and recipient can access content.

This extends security previously limited to iMessage conversations between Apple devices.

A new "Reduce Bright Effects" accessibility setting addresses feedback about iOS 26's Liquid Glass interface introduced last fall. The option minimizes highlighting around buttons, sliders, and other interface elements that some users found distracting or overwhelming.

Apple describes the feature as minimizing highlighting effects throughout the system.

Apple Music gains AI-generated playlist creation through a "Playlist Playground" feature that builds custom mixes based on text prompts like "Make me a playlist for drinking coffee on a lazy Sunday morning." The service also adds concert recommendations showing upcoming shows in users' areas based on listening history.

The beta continues Apple's weekly testing schedule leading toward a public release expected later this month. Previous iOS 26.4 betas introduced RCS support itself along with compact tab bars for Safari, battery charging optimizations for Macs, and wallpaper pack management improvements.
