AMD has confirmed that development of the next-generation Xbox console is progressing well and could support a 2027 launch. The chipmaker's CEO Lisa Su made the statement during AMD's latest earnings call, providing the first official hardware partner confirmation of the next-gen timeline.

"Development of Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC, is progressing well to support a launch in 2027," Su said during the call.

The comment doesn't guarantee the tech giant will release its next console that year, but it confirms AMD's silicon will be ready if that schedule proceeds.

The strategic multi-year partnership with AMD last year covers co-engineering silicon across multiple devices. The collaboration includes traditional consoles, potential handheld hardware, and next-generation Xbox Cloud Gaming servers.

The target represents a significant clarification after months of uncertainty about next-gen console timing. Earlier leaks from the FTC v. Microsoft case had pointed to a potential 2028 release, while industry analysts warned that rising memory costs could push both companies and Sony's PlayStation 6 beyond initial targets.

The Redmond-based company has described its next Xbox as "a very premium, very high-end curated experience," according to Xbox president Sarah Bond. The aim is to blur lines between console and PC gaming, with recent initiatives like the Xbox Full Screen Experience for Windows 11 PCs serving as groundwork for this hybrid approach.

AMD's gaming and semi-custom business currently supports three major platforms: Valve's Steam Machine scheduled for early 2026 release, the next Xbox targeting 2027, and Sony's PlayStation 6. While Sony hasn't confirmed PS6 timing, some analysts suggest it could arrive after 2028 as the company extends PlayStation 5's lifecycle.

The company has committed to full backward compatibility with existing Xbox libraries on its next console.

It is reportedly exploring multiple prototypes including a redesigned Elite Series 3 controller and considering an operating system more closely integrated with Windows for smooth device transitions.

The potential launch would match plans to celebrate Xbox's 25th anniversary in November 2026, with AMD CFO Jean Hu noting that current console cycles are entering later stages, impacting near-term revenue from semi-custom chips but emphasizing long-term partnerships remain intact.
