Adobe announced a multi-year partnership with Runway in December 2025, integrating Runway's Gen-4.5 AI video generation model directly into Adobe Firefly. The partnership makes Adobe Runway's preferred API creativity partner, giving Adobe customers early access to Runway's newest models.
The integration brings Runway's generative video technology into Adobe's creative ecosystem, which includes Premiere Pro and After Effects. Adobe CTO Ely Greenfield said "Runway's generative video innovation combined with Adobe's trusted pro workflows will help creators and brands expand their creative potential and meet the growing demands of modern content and media production."
Adobe simultaneously launched major updates to Firefly's video capabilities, adding prompt-based editing that lets users modify existing clips without regenerating entire videos. Previously, users had to recreate complete clips if any element needed adjustment.
The new Prompt To Edit feature uses Runway's Aleph model to process natural language commands like "remove the person on the left side" or "change the sky to overcast." Users can generate a video in Firefly and then edit it using specific text instructions.
Camera motion controls allow users to upload a start frame image and a reference video showing desired camera movements. The model then generates both the scene and the cinematic motions, saving hours of trial and error for professional creators.
Third-party models including Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 and Topaz Astra for video upscaling joined the Firefly platform. FLUX.2 provides photorealistic detail and advanced text rendering, while Topaz Astra transforms low-resolution clips into 1080p or 4K quality.
Firefly's video editor entered public beta as a browser-based tool for complete video generation and editing. The editor supports multitrack timelines, music integration, and works on any device without downloading full applications.
Adobe launched a limited-time promotion offering unlimited access to all Firefly models until January 15, 2026. Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, 7,000-credit, and 50,000-credit plan subscribers get unlimited image and video generations across Adobe's own and third-party models.
The partnership positions Adobe against competitors like OpenAI's Sora in the AI video generation space. Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said "This partnership puts our latest generative video technology in front of more storytellers, inside Adobe's creative tools that are already the industry standard for many creators around the world."
Adobe and Runway will work directly with filmmakers, studios, agencies, and streaming platforms to bring new video features into Adobe's applications. The integration raises questions about AI's role in creative production and how it will affect traditional film, TV, and advertising workflows.
Firefly users can mix different AI models depending on the job, including Adobe's own and Runway's, without that content being used to train AI systems. The company first announced the video editor in October 2025 in private beta before the public rollout. This partnership follows a trend of major corporations forming strategic AI alliances, similar to Allianz's global partnership with Anthropic earlier this month.
