Your Roku remote stops responding, and suddenly you cannot get past the home screen or turn down the TV. Start with its batteries and connection, then work through the fix for the buttons that fail. If navigation still works, skip straight to the power, volume, voice, or streaming-app section that matches your problem.

Start with the remote and its batteries

Look for a microphone or magnifying-glass button. Either identifies a voice remote. A missing pairing button does not identify a remote as infrared; some voice remotes have no pairing button.

For a remote with replaceable batteries, remove the batteries.

Press any two buttons while the batteries are out.

Install matching fresh batteries, inserting the negative ends first.

For a rechargeable voice remote, charge it with the supplied cable and USB power for at least five hours when troubleshooting.

When you have working menu controls, check the paired remote's battery information under Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > your remote > About.

If the remote overheats, stop using it, disconnect charging, and leave it on a hard, nonflammable surface to cool without removing hot alkaline batteries.

If your simple remote only works at certain angles

A simple infrared remote needs a clear signal path to the Roku receiver. Use these checks when furniture, a cabinet, or the TV itself blocks that path.

Uncover the Roku receiver.

Move the player out of the cabinet or from behind the TV.

Test the remote from different aiming angles.

For an infrared TCL Roku TV remote, open your phone's camera.

Aim the remote's emitter into the camera.

Hold a remote button while watching for flashing on the phone screen. Some cameras filter infrared, so no flash does not prove the remote is broken.

If there is no flash and you have not already tried fresh batteries, replace them.

Repeat the camera test.

Restart the remote and the Roku

A restart addresses an unresponsive rechargeable remote or a frozen Roku.

On a rechargeable voice remote with a Pairing button, hold it for 20 seconds.

On a rechargeable model without that button, hold Back and Home together for 20 seconds instead.

Wait until the flashing stops.

Test a Roku TV's physical controls to distinguish a frozen TV from a remote problem.

With working menu controls, select Settings > System > Power > System restart. If Power is absent, select System restart directly under System. Pressing the TV's Power button alone does not perform a system restart.

Without working menu controls, disconnect the Roku from power for at least ten seconds. For a TCL Roku TV, leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds.

Reconnect the power.

Wait for startup to finish.

Test the remote again.

If a low-battery warning persists after restarting your active remote, remove the batteries from unused remotes.

Reconnect a voice remote that has lost pairing

A lost pairing connection prevents a voice remote from controlling the Roku.

Move closer to the Roku.

Remove obstacles between the devices.

Move nearby electronics away to reduce wireless interference.

For a Streaming Stick supplied with a USB power cable containing an integrated wireless receiver, use that supplied cable.

Using another working remote or the Roku mobile app described below, press Home.

Open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue to put the Roku into pairing mode.

If you have no other working control method, disconnect Roku power for at least five seconds instead.

Reconnect the Roku.

Wait for the home screen before activating the remote's pairing mode.

On a voice remote with a Pairing button, hold it for five seconds until the light flashes. The Roku and remote must be in pairing mode together.

On a voice remote without that button, hold Back and Home together for five seconds until flashing starts instead.

Use your phone to get control back

Download the official Roku mobile app through the Download on the Apple App Store or Get it on Google Play link on Roku's app page.

Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as your Roku. The Roku must already be connected; the app cannot complete initial Wi-Fi setup on a disconnected or reset device.

Select your Roku in the app.

Tap Remote.

If an iPhone or iPad cannot discover the Roku, locate Roku in Apple's Settings app.

Enable Local Network.

Disconnect any VPN that blocks local network traffic.

If discovery still fails, close Roku from the iOS app switcher or Android Recents screen.

Reopen the Roku app.

If another remote gives you access to the Roku menus, read the IP address under Settings > Network > About.

In the mobile app, open Devices > Get help? > Connect manually.

Enter the Roku's IP address.

Tap CONNECT.

If network control is disabled, use another working control method to select Enabled under Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Control by mobile apps.

When only TV power or volume fails

Repeat TV-control setup when your voice remote navigates Roku but its TV power or volume buttons fail.

  1. 1.If the player connects through a soundbar or receiver, temporarily connect it directly to the TV. Unmute the TV and raise its volume for the sound test.
  2. 2.Open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes, select your remote, and choose Set up remote for TV control.
  3. 3.Aim the remote at the TV and follow the sound tests. Re-enter the TV brand if the setup requires it.
  4. 4.If power or volume works but the other does not, repeat setup. When the music stops, raise the TV volume until it resumes and select No to skip that code. Select Yes at the next successful stop.
  5. 5.For a USB-powered player that cannot turn the TV back on, switch from TV-USB power to wall power. This keeps the player powered when the television switches off.
  6. 6.For compatible HDMI-connected equipment, enable the TV's HDMI-CEC setting; its name varies by manufacturer. Roku remotes do not directly program another soundbar or receiver's controls, and some TVs support only part of the power and volume functionality.

Get voice commands working again

These checks address voice commands that fail while other buttons still work.

For push-to-talk, position the remote 2–3 inches from your mouth.

Hold the voice button while speaking.

Release the button when you finish.

On a model supporting hands-free voice, enable the side switch.

Say “Hey Roku” and speak toward the remote from within 10–12 feet.

Reduce competing TV sound if the remote does not recognize your command.

Try voice control in the Roku mobile app.

Grant microphone access when requested.

If recognition still fails, enter your query using the on-screen keyboard in Roku Search.

Problems limited to one app or outdated software

If a command works elsewhere on Roku but fails inside one streaming app, start with that app's controls and updates. Once you have working navigation, check for a Roku software update too.

Check the streaming app's own controls for the command that behaves differently.

Highlight the app on the Roku home screen.

Press Star.

Select Check for updates.

For a Roku system update, open Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. Some Roku menus call this System update.

Wait for installation and the restart to finish.

Test the remote again.

Check for damage before buying a replacement

For a TCL Roku TV remote with stuck buttons, press each button repeatedly.

Remove debris around the affected buttons.

Inspect the remote for damage from a drop or liquid.

Replace a physically damaged remote.

Before choosing a replacement, find your Roku model under Settings > System > About.

For a voice remote, compare that model with Roku's voice remote compatibility table. For a simple remote, check the replacement's own compatibility listing instead: Roku sells separate simple remotes for Roku TVs and players, and its Players Remote does not work with Roku Streaming Stick models. Compatibility depends on both the Roku and the remote model.

Choose an explicitly compatible replacement through the accessories-store link on Roku's replacement remote page.

A factory reset is a last resort for persistent device-wide failure. It removes preferences, apps, and account linkage and requires setup again. A disconnected or reset Roku needs a compatible physical remote for initial Wi-Fi setup; the mobile app cannot complete it.

If a compatible replacement still does not resolve the problem, open Roku's troubleshooting support category and select Start chatting under Chat with us for further help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the mobile remote work with a Roku connected by Ethernet?

Yes, provided the Roku's wired network and your phone's wireless network allow local communication. If network isolation blocks the connection, consult your router's documentation or ask the network administrator to remove that restriction.

How can I find a missing Roku remote?

On a Voice Remote Pro with hands-free listening enabled, say “Hey Roku, where’s my remote?” Alternatively, open Devices in the Roku app, open the connected Roku's three-dot menu, and tap Ping Remote. The finder requires a supported remote with a built-in speaker, sufficient battery power, and wireless range.

Why did my TV lose sound after I used headphones with the remote?

Completely unplug the headphones from the remote to restore TV sound. Physical-remote and mobile Headphone Mode cannot operate simultaneously, so also unplug them before starting headphone listening through the app. Leaving headphones unplugged when unused conserves the remote's battery.

How do I enable voice control while my Roku TV's screen is off?

Open Settings > System > Power > Fast TV Start and check Enable ‘Fast TV Start’. This keeps standby connections active for supported voice and shortcut operations and increases standby power consumption.
