Trying to tell one Roku from another gets confusing when their names don’t identify the room. Give your streaming player or Roku TV a recognizable name through your Roku account or the Roku mobile app. For names shown in Google Home or Apple Home, use the separate controls below.
Rename your Roku through your account
Start here to change the name of a Roku streaming player or Roku TV linked to your account.
Sign in at my.roku.com.
Under My devices, select the Roku you want to rename.
Open Device details > Nickname.
Enter a recognizable name, such as “Bedroom Roku.”
Click Save.
To change its location instead, choose Device location.
These labels follow Roku’s US instructions. Roku’s current Canadian and UK help pages instead list My linked devices > Rename.
If you cannot complete the change in your browser, try the Roku mobile app method below.
Use the Roku mobile app
A Wi-Fi mismatch prevents the Roku mobile app from meeting its connection requirement.
Connect your phone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network. If your Roku uses a wired Ethernet connection, make sure it has an IP address in the same range as your phone on your home network. This method works on iOS and Android.
In the Roku mobile app, select your Roku under Devices.
Open Options (•••) > Set Name and Location.
Sign in to your Roku account if prompted.
Edit the name or location fields.
Tap Save.
Roku’s Canadian and UK help pages list a different app path: Settings in the bottom navigation bar > Edit Name, with Switch Roku Device to rename a different Roku.
Assign a separate nickname in Google Home
For a compatible Roku already linked to Google Home, you can assign a nickname within that app. The nickname stays separate from the name in Roku’s app.
Open Google Home > Home > All devices.
Touch and hold your Roku tile to open its controls.
Set the nickname under Settings > Name > Save.
Change the name in Apple Home
Use this method for a HomeKit-compatible Roku already added to Apple Home. It edits the accessory name within Apple Home; to change the device name in your Roku account, use the account method above.
Open the Home app on your iPhone.
Tap the right side of the Roku accessory tile.
Tap the Settings button.
Use the Delete button in the name field to clear the existing name.
Type the replacement name.
Update the label in your Wi-Fi device list
A different name in Google Home’s network device list comes from its separate labeling system.
For a Wi-Fi network managed through Google Home, open Google Home > Home > Wifi > Devices. Google’s UK English help lists this path as Favourites > Wi-Fi > Devices.
Select your Roku from the network device list.
Edit its name. The change saves automatically and affects only the label in that app’s network device list.
Name a Roku Smart Home device or group
For a Roku Smart Home device or group, use the Roku Smart Home app. The device must be linked to your account, but your phone and device do not need matching Wi-Fi networks.
Open Home in the Roku Smart Home app.
Select the device or group.
Open Settings > Name.
Enter the replacement name.
Confirm with Done, Finish Naming, or Save, depending on the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rename my Roku directly from its TV settings?
Roku’s naming instructions say that after initial setup, you update your device’s name and location from your Roku account or the Roku mobile app. Use one of those methods instead.
Can I name my Roku during setup?
Yes. Roku supports naming your device during initial activation. You can change that name later through your account or the Roku mobile app.
Does renaming a TV input change my Roku’s name?
No. Renaming a TV input changes the input label, not the Roku’s account name.
Where can I get the official Roku mobile app?
Visit roku.com/mobile-app and follow its Apple App Store or Google Play link.
