YouTube not working in Brave can show up as a blank player, endless loading, missing sound, sign-in loops, stuttering video, or an ad-block warning that stops playback. Start with the quick checks, then move into Brave-specific fixes for Shields, cookies, permissions, extensions, and updates. By the end, you will know whether the problem is YouTube, your Brave profile, a privacy setting, or the browser itself.

Reload YouTube before changing Brave settings

A stale tab or weak connection is the fastest common cause to rule out when YouTube stops working in Brave. Click the Reload icon on the YouTube tab. On Windows or Linux, press F5 or Ctrl + r for a normal reload.

If the player still spins or the page looks half-loaded, force a hard reload with Shift + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + r on Windows or Linux. On macOS, press ⌘ + Shift + r for a hard reload. Confirm that the computer is connected to Wi-Fi or a wired network, then reload the YouTube tab again.

Open YouTube in a private window

Use this when YouTube fails in your normal Brave window but other websites still open. A Private Window separates a regular-profile problem from a wider page-load problem.

Open Brave and click Menu. Choose New Private Window. Go to youtube.com and try the same video.

If YouTube works there, clean up the regular profile. Start with YouTube cookies and site data, then check Shields and extensions.

Clear YouTube cookies and site data

Open youtube.com in Brave. Click the lock or tune icon to the left of the address bar. Choose Cookies and site data. Open Manage on-device site data.

Select the stored YouTube or Google entries shown for the site. Click the trash icon. Choose Done. Refresh YouTube.

On Android, open Menu. Tap Settings. Open Site settings. Choose All Sites.

Select youtube.com or the related Google or YouTube entry. Tap the trash icon or Delete data & reset permissions.

On iPhone or iPad, open Menu. Tap All Settings. Open Shields & Privacy.

Under Clear Private Data, choose the data types you want to remove. Tap Clear Data Now.

For a wider desktop cleanup, open Menu. Go to Settings. Open Additional settings. Choose Privacy and Security.

Click Delete browsing data. Choose the time range and data types. Click Clear data. Use the site-only cleanup first when YouTube is the only broken website.

Lower Brave Shields for YouTube

This fixes YouTube pages broken by Brave's ad and tracker blocking, cookie blocking, or fingerprinting protection. Open youtube.com in Brave. Click the Lion icon at the right side of the address bar.

Switch Shields State to Shields Down for YouTube. Reload YouTube. To keep Shields on, click the Lion icon again. Open Advanced controls.

Change Block trackers & ads away from Aggressive. Reload YouTube. If player features still break, open Advanced controls. Turn Block Fingerprinting off for YouTube.

Reload YouTube. If YouTube shows an ad-blocking warning, allow ads on YouTube by disabling Brave Shields or other ad blockers for that site, or use YouTube Premium.

Fix sign in playback and sound

Use this when YouTube opens but sign-in, consent screens, player controls, autoplay, or sound fail. YouTube needs JavaScript for normal playback and its interface.

Open Menu, then Settings. Go to Privacy and security. Open Site & Shield Settings. Choose JavaScript and allow JavaScript.

To change only YouTube, open YouTube and click the tune icon. Open Site settings. Change the JavaScript permission so YouTube can run scripts.

For videos that load but will not start automatically, return to Site & Shield Settings. Update Autoplay. Reload YouTube.

For videos that play without audio, return to Site & Shield Settings. Update Sound. Reload YouTube.

For cookie-related sign-in or consent loops on desktop, open the Lion icon on YouTube. Choose Advanced controls. Set Cookie Control to Allow all cookies. Reload YouTube.

On Android, go to Settings, then Site Settings. Open Third-party cookies. Choose Allow all cookies when cookie blocking is breaking YouTube.

Remove extension and VPN conflicts

Another blocker layered on top of Brave is the most common add-on conflict, especially a third-party ad blocker, script blocker, VPN extension, proxy extension, download helper, or video enhancer.

Open Menu. Go to More Tools. Open Extensions. Turn off one suspect extension with its extension toggle.

Reload YouTube after each change. When YouTube starts working, leave that extension off for YouTube or click Remove.

If you use Brave Firewall + VPN, click the Brave VPN toolbar button next to the main menu. Or open Menu, then Brave VPN. Turn the VPN off when YouTube is blocked or slow. Select a different region from the VPN panel when YouTube shows the wrong region.

Update Brave and smooth out playback

Use these when YouTube opens but crashes, stutters, goes inactive, or fails on paid and protected videos.

  1. 1.Open Menu, Help, then About Brave. Let Brave download the update, then relaunch when prompted.
  2. 2.Open Menu, Settings, System, then Performance. Next to Always keep these sites active, click Add, enter youtube.com or youtube.com/watch?v=*, and click Add again.
  3. 3.On a laptop, open Menu, Settings, System, then Power. Turn Energy Saver off and retry YouTube.
  4. 4.For a black screen, flicker, crashes, or severe video stutter, open brave://settings/system. Toggle Use graphics acceleration when available, relaunch Brave, and test YouTube again.
  5. 5.For rented, paid, or protected YouTube video, open Menu, Settings, then Extensions. Turn on Widevine. If DRM errors continue, open brave://settings/extensions, turn Widevine off and back on, relaunch if prompted, then refresh YouTube.

Check managed settings and skip old fixes

A work, school, family, or security-managed device can lock the Brave settings that fix YouTube. Open the Brave main menu and look for Managed by your organization, or open brave://management.

You can also open brave://policy to view active policies.

Skip Flash fixes for YouTube in Brave. Flash is not a current fix for modern YouTube playback. Skip third-party YouTube ad-block bypass extensions and userscripts as a Brave fix. When YouTube blocks playback because of ad blocking, allow ads on YouTube or use YouTube Premium.

If those checks do not explain the problem, reset Brave settings next.

Reset or reinstall Brave

This fixes a Brave setup where extensions, site settings, startup pages, or content settings keep interfering after targeted YouTube fixes fail.

Open Menu. Choose Reset settings. On Linux or macOS, click Restore settings to their original defaults.

On Windows, open Reset and cleanup. Click Restore settings to their original defaults. Try YouTube again after the reset. Resetting Brave settings does not erase bookmarks, history, or saved passwords.

If Brave still will not handle YouTube, uninstall Brave from your operating system. On Windows, search Windows for Add or Remove programs. Select Brave. Click Uninstall.

On macOS, move Brave from Applications to the trash. On Linux, use your distribution's Brave uninstall command. Download Brave again from https://brave.com/download/. Avoid third-party download portals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does YouTube work in a Private Window but not my normal Brave window?

That points to something in your regular Brave profile, such as cookies, site data, Shields settings, permissions, or an extension. Clear YouTube site data first, then test Shields and extensions.

Should I enable Flash to fix YouTube in Brave?

No. Flash is obsolete for modern YouTube in Brave. Use current fixes such as Shields, site data, permissions, browser updates, or YouTube's ad-block warning options.

Does resetting Brave delete my bookmarks or passwords?

No. Resetting Brave settings to defaults does not erase bookmarks, history, or saved passwords.

What should I do if YouTube blocks playback because of ad blocking?

Allow ads on YouTube by disabling Brave Shields or other ad blockers for that site, or use YouTube Premium.

Why do paid YouTube movies fail in Brave?

Paid, rented, or protected videos can require Widevine DRM. Turn on Widevine in Brave's Extensions settings, relaunch if prompted, and refresh YouTube.
