Spotify Canvas is supposed to show short looping visuals in the mobile app’s Now Playing View, but sometimes you only get static album art. The usual cause is a switched-off setting, Data Saver, region availability, a stale app, or a track that does not have a Canvas.

Start with the Spotify mobile app, since Canvas playback is a mobile app feature. Desktop and web settings still help because Spotify’s Videos and Canvas preferences can sync across the devices using your account.

Turn Canvas On In Spotify

Open the Spotify mobile app and tap your avatar/profile picture. Tap Settings and privacy, then open Content and display. Under Videos and Canvas or Canvas, switch Canvas on.

Switch Off Spotify Data Saver

What this fixes: Spotify’s own data-saving setting is blocking Canvas. Open the Spotify mobile app and tap your avatar/profile picture. Go to Settings and privacy, tap Data-saving and offline, and set Data Saver to Off.

Check The Track In Now Playing View

Play the track in the Spotify mobile app and open Now Playing View. If you still see static album art, play another track that has a Canvas.

When Canvas works on other songs, the artist or label has not added a Canvas to that exact track version. Canvas only replaces album art for tracks that have one available to your account.

Confirm Canvas Is Available In Your Region

This applies when your settings are correct but Canvas still does not appear. Canvas only works in Spotify-supported countries and regions.

Check whether your listener location is on Spotify’s Canvas availability list. If you moved, open your Spotify account page and choose Edit profile.

Select Country or region, choose your current country or region, and tap Save profile. If you use Premium and moved countries, open the account page, go to payment method, choose Update, and enter a payment method issued in the new country or region.

Resync Canvas From Web Or Desktop

The most common account-level cause is a synced Videos and Canvas preference that is off outside the mobile app. In the Spotify Web Player, click your profile picture. Open Settings. Under Videos and Canvas, switch Canvas on.

In the Spotify desktop app, click your profile picture. Open Settings. Under Display, switch on Display short, looping visuals on tracks (Canvas). After changing the setting on web or desktop, check playback in the Spotify mobile app’s Now Playing View.

Turn Off Offline Mode And Network Blocks

What this fixes: Spotify cannot load Canvas because the app, network, VPN, proxy, or firewall is blocking online content. On mobile or tablet, tap your avatar/profile picture and open Settings and privacy. Tap Data-saving and offline. If Offline mode is on, switch it off.

On Mac, open the menu bar’s Spotify menu and switch Offline mode off. On Windows, open the three-dot menu, choose File, and switch Offline mode off. Turn off your VPN in the VPN app or system VPN settings, then quit and reopen Spotify.

If you are on a school, office, shared, or public network, ask the network administrator to allow Spotify. On desktop, set Spotify as an exception in your firewall.

Refresh Spotify And Clear Cache

This applies when Canvas briefly stopped loading or the Now Playing View is stuck on old artwork. Restarting Spotify and clearing cache gives the app fresh local data.

On iPhone, open the App Switcher. Swipe to Spotify and swipe up on Spotify. Open Spotify again from the Home Screen or App Library.

On Android with gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, hold, and let go. Swipe Spotify away, then reopen Spotify.

To clear cache on iPhone or Android, tap your avatar/profile picture. Open Settings and privacy. Go to Data-saving and offline.

Under Storage, tap Clear next to Clear cache. On desktop, click your profile picture, open Settings, scroll to Storage, and choose Clear cache.

Update Or Reinstall Spotify

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store. Tap your Apple ID image. Find Spotify and tap UPDATE.

On Android, open the Google Play Store. Search for Spotify and tap UPDATE.

On desktop, look for a blue dot next to your profile picture. Click your profile picture and choose Update Spotify now.

If updating does not help, reinstall Spotify from Spotify’s official download page, the App Store, Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, or the Microsoft Store. After reinstalling, use a supported device: iOS 16.1 or above, Android OS 7.0 or above, macOS 13.0 or above, Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11, or above. Use desktop and web to change the account setting, then confirm Canvas in the mobile app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Spotify Canvas greyed out?

Turn off Spotify’s in-app Data Saver first. If the toggle still stays unavailable, turn off device data saver or battery saver settings, then reopen Spotify.

Does Spotify Canvas work on desktop?

Spotify treats Canvas playback as a mobile app feature. The desktop app can still change the account-level Canvas setting under Display.

Why does Canvas work for some songs but not others?

Not every track has a Canvas. If the artist or label did not add one to that exact track version, Spotify shows static album art.

Can a Premium Family manager block Canvas?

Yes. A Premium Family plan manager can open the member’s Videos and Canvas settings and switch Canvas back on.
