Spectrum TV can lose sound while the picture keeps playing, which usually points to mute, a loose connection, or an audio setting that no longer matches your TV or speakers. Start with the fastest checks, then move through the receiver, app, Xumo, and remote fixes that match your setup.

Start with mute and volume

The most common cause is a muted TV, Spectrum receiver, or connected audio device.

Raise the volume with your remote, then press Mute once to make sure mute is off.

If your Spectrum remote controls both the TV and receiver, try the TV remote too so you can tell which device is responding.

On Spectrum Guide, use VOLUME +/- to adjust the volume. Keep the same channel playing while you check the TV audio output next.

Match the TV audio output

Your TV may be sending audio to the wrong output mode after a setting change, device swap, or receiver reboot.

Open the TV manufacturer's sound menu, usually under Settings, Sound, or Audio. Menu names vary by TV brand.

Set the TV audio output to Stereo or Surround Sound. Use Stereo for TV speakers or a basic soundbar, and Surround Sound for an AV receiver or surround setup.

Return to Spectrum TV and test a live channel again.

Reseat every TV cable

This fixes sound loss caused by a loose HDMI, component, or audio cable.

Turn the TV on and leave the Spectrum receiver, Xumo Stream Box, or streaming device connected.

Unplug the HDMI cable from the TV and from the Spectrum device.

Plug the HDMI cable firmly back into both ends.

If your setup uses component or separate audio cables, unplug and reconnect those cables too.

Switch the TV back to the correct HDMI or input source, then test Spectrum TV again.

Adjust Spectrum Guide audio settings

Use these settings on Spectrum Guide receivers; older Optimal Stereo instructions are a legacy path, not the Spectrum Guide fix.

  1. 1.Press Menu on the Spectrum remote.
  2. 2.Go to Settings & Support, then Preferences.
  3. 3.Open Audio & Video, then choose Audio.
  4. 4.Change Stereo Audio to Enhanced, Compact, or Standard.
  5. 5.Change Audio Output to Dolby Digital, HDMI, or Other, depending on your TV, soundbar, or AV receiver.

Restart the Spectrum receiver

Unplug the Spectrum receiver from power.

Wait at least 60 seconds.

Plug the receiver back in.

Let the receiver and guide fully reload before testing the audio.

To restart it online, sign in to Spectrum.net, open Services, choose TV, select your equipment, and choose Restart Equipment.

For receivers with a physical reset button, make sure the TV is on, then press and hold Reset for a full five seconds and release it.

After the Spectrum logo and reboot sequence finish, test the same channel and then a second channel.

Tip: if sound returns after a reboot but drops again, continue with cable checks, app updates, or Spectrum support instead of repeatedly restarting the box.

Fix sound in the Spectrum TV app

The most common app-side cause is stale device software or an app session that needs a clean restart.

Restart the device you use for the Spectrum TV App. On SpectrumTV.net, restart the laptop or desktop.

On a streaming device, phone, tablet, smart TV, console, or Xumo device, turn it off and wait 60 seconds before turning it back on.

Install the latest Spectrum TV App version available for your device.

Install all recommended operating system or software updates for the device, then reopen Spectrum TV.

If sound is still missing, uninstall and reinstall the Spectrum TV App on devices that allow removal.

On Roku, press Home, highlight Spectrum TV, press Star (*), choose Remove app, confirm, then reinstall it from the store or search.

On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Spectrum TV, choose Remove App, then Delete App and Delete, then download it again from the App Store.

On Android, open Google Play, tap the Profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, then Manage, select Spectrum TV, choose Uninstall, and reinstall it.

Check SpectrumTV.net playback

This fixes browser playback problems when SpectrumTV.net has video but no usable audio.

Check whether your internet connection is working properly.

Open another website that plays video and test the sound there.

If other video websites also have trouble, fix the internet connection before spending more time inside Spectrum TV.

When the same app audio issue happens on multiple devices over home Wi-Fi, unplug the modem or router power cords for 30 seconds.

Plug the modem or router back in, wait for the connection to return, and test the Spectrum TV App again.

Set up Xumo sound and remote control

Use this method when Spectrum TV plays through a Xumo Stream Box, especially when the sound output is wrong or the Xumo remote does not control the TV or speakers.

Open Settings, then go to Picture and sound and Sound. Change the audio language, output, or delay to match your TV and speaker setup.

For external speakers, go to Settings, then Picture and sound (shown as Picture and Sound mode on some Spectrum Xumo boxes), open Sound if present, and choose Digital Audio Output HDMI.

With the voice remote, press and hold the voice control button and say Settings, or press the Settings button.

If the volume or mute buttons do not control the right device, go to Settings, Connected devices, then Remote, and choose Control your TV or Control a speaker system to connect the remote to your TV and speakers.

You can also press and hold the Microphone button for 10 seconds, then use Remote Connected devices and OK/Select.

Handle surround sound and support

For Spectrum TV App video on demand, enhanced audio formats such as 5.1 or 7.1 are handled through the streaming device's audio settings, such as Xumo, Apple TV, or a similar device.

On Xumo, use Settings, Picture and sound, open Sound if present, then choose Digital Audio Output HDMI. Do not use older advice that says the Spectrum TV App never supports 5.1 audio for video on demand; current Spectrum sound guidance supports enhanced formats for VOD through compatible streaming-device audio settings.

Live TV and optical audio remain separate limitations, so do not treat video-on-demand format support as a fix for either path.

If the remote volume buttons still do not work, use Spectrum's remote programming flow for your exact remote model. For 1060BC2 and 1060BC3 remotes, press a device key such as AUX, DVD, TV, CBL, or STB, hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then enter the five-digit device code.

If this method fails, contact Spectrum support by phone or chat so they can check the receiver, remote, signal, or equipment for service, replacement, or exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Spectrum TV have picture but no sound?

The most likely causes are mute or low volume, a loose HDMI or audio cable, the wrong TV audio output, or a Spectrum receiver audio setting that does not match your TV or speaker setup.

Does restarting the Spectrum receiver fix no sound?

Yes, it can. Unplug the receiver for at least 60 seconds, plug it back in, and let the guide fully reload before testing audio again.

What should I do if only the Spectrum TV app has no sound?

Restart the device, update the Spectrum TV App and device software, then uninstall and reinstall the app if the device allows it. If multiple devices have the same app issue, restart the modem or router for 30 seconds.

Can the Spectrum TV App play 5.1 or 7.1 audio?

For video on demand, Spectrum's current guidance says enhanced audio formats such as 5.1 or 7.1 are available through compatible streaming-device audio settings. Spectrum's current guidance does not support treating that as a live TV or optical-audio fix.
