ESPN can stop working on YouTube TV when your plan, location, account, billing, or device playback check fails. Start with access and location first, because those decide whether YouTube TV can show ESPN at all. Then move through the faster app and device fixes before contacting support.

Confirm ESPN is included where you watch

Use this when ESPN is missing from the live guide, asks for access, or disappears after a plan or location change.

Go to tv.youtube.com/welcome and enter your home ZIP code to check whether ESPN and ESPN networks are available in your YouTube TV home area.

Open YouTube TV, select your profile photo, choose Settings, then open Membership.

Confirm that your current plan includes ESPN. Channel availability depends on your home area, current location, plan, and partner restrictions.

Switch to a plan that carries ESPN

If your membership does not include ESPN, change the plan from YouTube TV settings.

  1. 1.Open YouTube TV and go to Settings.
  2. 2.Select Membership.
  3. 3.Choose the plan you want to switch to.
  4. 4.Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the new plan.

Plan switching is not available in the iOS or Android apps. If a mobile carrier or internet provider bills your subscription, use that billing provider's support to change the plan.

Fix your current playback area

Location is a common reason ESPN or sports content fails on YouTube TV. On a TV, open the YouTube TV app, select your profile photo, choose Location, then select Current Playback Area.

Follow the prompts on the TV. When YouTube TV asks for mobile verification, go to tv.youtube.com/verify on your mobile device and allow location access.

On a computer, open YouTube TV, select your profile photo, choose Location, then select Update next to Current playback area. If Chrome blocks the check, open More, then Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, and Location, then allow YouTube TV to use location.

If you moved, change the home area instead: go to tv.youtube.com, select your profile photo, choose Location, then select Update next to Home area. You must be physically in the new home area, and YouTube TV blocks another home-area change if you already changed it twice in the last 12 months.

Turn off VPNs and proxies

This fixes restricted playback caused by location masking.

Turn off the VPN in your VPN app.

Disable any browser extension that routes traffic through a proxy.

Check your router or operating system network settings if the VPN or proxy runs outside the YouTube TV app.

Reopen YouTube TV and play ESPN again.

Restricted streaming content does not work on YouTube TV while a VPN or proxy is connected.

Refresh the app and your connection

Exit the YouTube TV app completely, reopen it, and play ESPN again.

Power off your TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or computer, wait 30 seconds, then start it again.

Unplug your router, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, then reopen YouTube TV.

Install the latest system updates for your device, then update the YouTube TV app to the newest available version.

If ESPN fails only on one device, uninstall YouTube TV, reinstall it, sign in again, and retry ESPN.

For buffering or stalling, lower video quality from More then Quality on mobile or casting, or from Settings then Quality on a computer.

For live TV interruptions on a TV, open the three-dot More menu, choose Broadcast Delay, then select Default.

Keep the app updated before major live events so the basic playback fixes are already out of the way.

Check the account and billing side

A wrong Google Account or billing problem can look like an ESPN channel outage.

  1. 1.Select your profile photo, open the account drop-down, and choose the Google Account with the YouTube TV subscription.
  2. 2.To add the right account, select Add account and enter the Google Account details.
  3. 3.To remove the wrong account, select your profile photo, choose Switch account, then select Remove under that account.
  4. 4.Go to tv.youtube.com/settings/billing, or select your profile photo, choose Settings, then open Billing.
  5. 5.Select Update next to Payment Method to view, change, or add payment details, then check Google Payments for alerts or verification requests.

Handle ESPN app sign-in separately

This fixes cases where ESPN works in YouTube TV but fails in the ESPN app or on ESPN.com.

Download and open the ESPN app.

Sign in with ESPN.com or MyDisney credentials, or create an account when prompted.

Start live ESPN content, then sign in with the username and password issued by your TV provider.

Make sure your YouTube TV package includes ESPN and your account is in good standing.

To stream ESPN Unlimited in the standalone ESPN app, link the two accounts first: open the YouTube TV mobile app, tap Profile at the top right, open Settings, then Sports, turn on Connect ESPN, and complete the prompts. Then open the ESPN app and sign in. You do not need to link accounts to watch ESPN Unlimited inside YouTube TV itself.

If you see a reauthentication error on iPhone or iPad, open iOS Settings.

Open TV Provider. Apple documents two placements for it, so check both: Apple's iPhone User Guide puts it under General, while Apple's TV provider support article lists TV Provider at the top level of Settings. Select it, then tap Remove TV Provider or Sign Out and confirm.

Reopen the ESPN app and sign in to the TV provider again.

If ESPN app playback still fails, force close the ESPN app, relaunch it, test another streaming app, test ESPN on another device, then uninstall and reinstall ESPN from the device's official app store.

Recognize sports restrictions

Some ESPN events on YouTube TV are restricted by content partners. When YouTube TV shows a restriction message, compare the event, home location, current location, device or platform, and league or network restriction.

There may be no setting to change beyond watching a different available airing or a location-permitted feed.

A past Disney and YouTube TV carriage blackout ran from October 30 to November 14, 2025 and ended after a new deal restored the channels. If this method fails today, repeat the location, account, and playback checks above, then contact YouTube TV support for channel access problems or ESPN Support for ESPN app provider-login problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ESPN not working on YouTube TV when other channels work?

The most likely causes are plan access, current playback area, home area, VPN or proxy use, sports restrictions, or a temporary app playback problem.

Can a VPN fix ESPN on YouTube TV?

No. Restricted streaming content on YouTube TV will not work while connected to a VPN or proxy, so the supported fix is to turn it off.

Why does ESPN work in YouTube TV but not in the ESPN app?

The ESPN app uses its own sign-in flow. Sign in with ESPN.com or MyDisney credentials, then authenticate live ESPN content with your TV provider account.

Who should I contact if ESPN still will not play?

Contact YouTube TV support for subscription, channel, billing, or playback-area issues. Contact ESPN Support from the ESPN app for ESPN app sign-in or provider-authentication problems.
