Factory resetting your Fairphone 5 is a powerful way to fix stubborn software problems or prepare it for a new owner. It completely erases all your personal data, apps, and settings, returning the phone to the state it was in when you first took it out of the box.

Back Up Everything Before You Start

This is the most important step. A factory reset is permanent, so you need to save your data first. Head to Settings > System > Backup and make sure backup is turned on for your Google account. Tap Back up now to create a fresh backup of your app data, call history, and device settings.

Double-check that your photos and videos are safely synced to Google Photos or another cloud service. I'd also recommend manually moving any important files from your internal storage to a computer or SD card, just to be extra safe.

Remove Your Google Account

To avoid getting locked out by Factory Reset Protection (FRP), you should sign out of your main Google account. Go to Settings > Passwords & accounts, select your Google account, and tap Remove account. Confirm you want to remove it. This step ensures a smooth setup process after the reset.

Perform the Reset from Settings

With your data backed up and account removed, you're ready. On your Fairphone 5, navigate to Settings > System > Reset options. Here, you'll see the Erase all data (factory reset) choice. Tap it, and the phone will show you a final summary of everything that will be deleted.

You'll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password to proceed. After confirming, the phone will restart and begin the wiping process. This usually takes a few minutes, and you'll eventually be greeted by the initial Android setup screen.

Using Recovery Mode for a Reset

If your phone is unresponsive, stuck in a boot loop, or you've forgotten your lock screen password, you'll need to use recovery mode. First, power the phone off completely. For the Fairphone 5, press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button together until the bootloader screen appears.

Use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery Mode and press the power button to select it. When you see the Android robot with an exclamation mark, hold the power button and briefly press the volume up button. This will bring up the recovery menu.

Navigate using the volume keys to Wipe data/factory reset and select it with the power button. Confirm your choice on the next screen. Once it's done, select Reboot system now to restart your freshly wiped phone.

Try a Less Drastic Reset First

Before doing a full factory reset, consider the other options in the Settings > System > Reset options menu. You can choose to Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth, which often fixes connectivity problems. The Reset app preferences option resets permissions and default apps without touching your data.

These targeted resets can solve a lot of common glitches. They're a great first step if you're dealing with a single app misbehaving or a network that won't connect.

Setting Up Your Phone Again

After the reset is complete, you'll go through the standard Android setup. Connect to Wi-Fi and sign back into your Google account. When prompted, choose to restore your data from the Google One backup you made earlier. This will reinstall your apps and bring back many of your settings.

Remember, the Fairphone 5's promise of long-term software support means starting fresh can sometimes be the best way to ensure a clean slate for those future Android updates. With its user-replaceable battery, you can think of a factory reset as a software refresh to match the hardware's longevity.
