Spam calls can be a real nuisance, but your Nothing Phone 2a has several built-in tools to shut them down. The process is straightforward, and you can manage everything directly from your phone's dialer and settings. I'll walk you through the different ways to block numbers and enable extra spam protection.

Block a Number from Your Call Log

Open your Phone app and head to the Recents tab. Find the spam number in your list and tap on it to view the call details. On this screen, you should see an option to Block & report spam. Tapping this will add the number to your blocked list and report it to Google to help improve spam detection for everyone.

If you don't see that option immediately, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the call details screen. From there, select Block number and confirm your choice. Once blocked, calls from that number will be silently sent to voicemail.

Block Someone from a Text Message

If the spam is coming via SMS, open the Messages app and find the conversation. Tap and hold on the message thread, then select the Block option from the menu that pops up. Alternatively, you can open the conversation, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and choose Details.

Inside the conversation details, you'll find a Block & report spam button. This is the most thorough option, as it both blocks the number and reports the messages as spam to help filter future texts. The sender won't be notified they've been blocked.

Manage Your Blocked Contacts List

To see who you've blocked or to unblock a number, go to your Phone app settings. Tap the three-dot menu in the Phone app and select Settings, then navigate to Blocked numbers. You'll see a complete list of all blocked contacts.

From this screen, you can tap the X next to any number to unblock it. You can also manually add numbers to the block list by tapping the Add a number field at the top. This is useful for preemptively blocking a number you know you don't want to hear from.

Turn On Google's Spam Protection

Your Nothing Phone 2a uses Google's Phone app by default, which has powerful spam filtering built right in. To make sure it's active, go to Phone app Settings > Caller ID & spam. Here, you'll find two key toggles.

First, enable See caller ID & spam. This lets Google identify businesses and warn you about suspected spam. Second, turn on Filter spam calls. With this on, calls Google is highly confident are spam won't even ring your phone, they'll be automatically declined.

Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers

For a more aggressive approach, you can silence all calls from numbers not in your contacts. This is great if you're getting a barrage of random spam. Go back to Phone app Settings > Blocked numbers.

Look for the option Unknown or Block calls from unknown numbers and toggle it on. When enabled, these calls won't ring, but they can still leave a voicemail. I'd recommend checking your voicemail occasionally if you use this, so you don't miss important calls from doctors, schools, or other legitimate businesses.

What Actually Happens When You Block

When you block a number on your Nothing Phone 2a, the caller is typically redirected to voicemail after one ring, or they may hear a busy signal. They won't receive any specific notification that they've been blocked. On your end, you won't get any call or notification alerts.

For text messages, it's even more seamless. Messages from a blocked number are completely dropped and never appear in your Messages app. You won't see them, and they won't be stored anywhere on your device. The block works across both calling and texting from that specific number.

Consider a Dedicated Call Blocker App

If you need even more robust protection, third-party apps from the Play Store can help. Apps like Truecaller have massive, community-updated databases of spam numbers and telemarketers. They can identify and block spam calls before your phone even starts to ring.

After installing one of these apps, it will ask for permission to manage your calls. Once granted, it acts as a filter, screening incoming calls against its database. These apps often provide caller ID for numbers not in your contacts, which can be helpful for identifying legitimate calls from unknown numbers.
