Spam calls are relentless, but your Pixel 9 Pro XL runs Android 14 with some of the smartest call blocking tools available. You can silence individual numbers or let Google Assistant screen every unknown caller for you. Here's how to take control of your incoming calls.

Block from Recent Calls

This is the fastest way to shut down a number that just called you. Open the Phone app and go to the Recents tab. Find the entry, then tap the contact photo or the i icon next to it. Scroll down and tap Block, that number will never get through again.

Block from Messages

If the spam is coming through as a text, the Messages app handles it the same way. Open the conversation, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Details. Hit Block and report spam. This removes the thread from your inbox and sends a report to Google to help train their filters.

You won't get any future notifications from this sender. Their texts disappear silently on Google's servers.

Block Contacts

Maybe a contact needs a time-out or you want to stop calls from a specific person entirely. Open the Contacts app, find their name, and open their profile. Tap the three-dot menu, then Block numbers. This blocks every number saved to that contact, which is handy if they have a home and mobile line.

View and Manage Your Blocked List

You can see everyone you've silenced by opening the Phone app, tapping the three-dot menu, and going to Settings > Blocked numbers. The full list shows up here. Tap Unblock next to any number to restore their ability to reach you. You can also manually add numbers by tapping Add a number.

Stop Spam Calls Before They Ring

Your Pixel 9 Pro XL has a built-in spam filter that works automatically when you turn it on. Go to Phone > Settings > Caller ID & spam. Toggle on See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls. When this is active, suspected spam calls are silenced and sent to voicemail without your phone ever making a sound.

This filter runs locally on your device using Google's spam database. It gets better over time as you report numbers.

Screen Calls with Google Assistant

This is the Pixel 9 Pro XL's best feature for dealing with unknown callers. When a call comes in from a number you don't recognize, you'll see a Screen call button. Tap it, and Google Assistant answers for you. You see a live transcript of the conversation in real time.

The caller hears something like "The person you're using is using a screening service." Based on their response, you can choose to pick up, send a quick reply, or report the call as spam. I've found that most robocalls just hang up as soon as the Assistant answers, instantly eliminating the interruption without any effort on your part.

To make it even smoother, you can set Call Screen to automatically screen certain types of callers. Go to Phone > Settings > Call Screen and choose your preferred level of protection.

Block All Unknown Numbers

If you're getting bombarded by spam from different numbers every day, you have a nuclear option. Open Phone > Settings > Blocked numbers and toggle on Unknown. This sends every call from a number not in your contacts straight to voicemail. It's aggressive, but it works.

Anyone with a legitimate reason to reach you can leave a voicemail, so you won't miss important calls from doctors or delivery services entirely. You just won't have to deal with the ringing.

How Blocking Affects Callers

When a number is blocked, the caller usually hears a single ring and then goes to voicemail or gets a busy signal. It depends on your carrier. They never receive a notification that they've been blocked. Their text messages simply never show up in your inbox.

Add Carrier-Level Protection

Your Pixel 9 Pro XL's built-in tools are powerful, but your carrier can help too. If you're on Google Fi, spam filtering is built right into the network. T-Mobile users have Scam Shield, and Verizon users have Call Filter. These apps work alongside your phone settings to catch spam before it even reaches the Google Phone app.

Third-Party Call Blocker Apps

If you still see too many spam calls, apps like Truecaller and Hiya can provide an extra layer of defense. They use crowdsourced databases to identify and block numbers that Google's filters might miss. They also show the name of unknown callers, so you know exactly who's trying to reach you.

You can download them from the Play Store and they integrate directly with the system's call blocking. Just follow the setup prompts to enable their full feature set.
