Google has announced that Fitbit users will soon be able to migrate their existing Fitbit account to a Google account. This move is set to take effect this summer and will see Google killing old Fitbit accounts and transitioning them to Google ones.
According to Google, if you purchase a Fitbit and begin using the Fitbit app for the first time this summer, you will be required to sign up for the Fitbit app using a Google account. However, existing Fitbit users will have the option to turn their Fitbit account into a Google account, though they won’t be forced to do so for a couple more years.
By 2025, Google will require anyone with a Fitbit account to move over to a Google one. The actual Fitbit app experience is not changing, but the way users log into it will change.
Users will have access to the same security/privacy settings that all Google accounts have. Google assures users that any health/wellness data from the Fitbit app will not be used for Google Ads and will continue to be kept separate from Google Ads data. Users will also be able to manage their Fitbit data through the Google Privacy Center.
In summary, starting this summer, new Fitbit users will be required to sign up for the Fitbit app using a Google account, and by 2025, all Fitbit users will be required to migrate to a Google account. However, the actual Fitbit app experience will remain the same, and users will have access to the same security/privacy settings.
