Do Not Disturb is a great feature you can find on iPhone. It can help you to focus on something without being disturbed by phone calls. Your iPhone will not ring, but it still allows the phone calls to come in and as you won’t hear the sound, you will see missed calls. In some cases, the user accidentally turns this feature on without even realizing. You can check at a glance to the top-left side of your iPhone screen. If you see the moon icon, it means the Do Not Disturb mode is activated. To disable it, follow the steps below:

Check headphone jack hole

Take a look at the headphone jack hole. The broken part of headphone that is left inside the hole, can cause iPhone not ringing problem because the iPhone will detect the call that comes in as an earphone mode. If you find nothing there, try to plug the original earphone. Call your number and if you can hear the sound, then the problem is related to your iPhone speaker. Otherwise, there might be a hardware issue.

Charging trick

This trick will not resolve the problem, but it can help you find the right solution. The loudspeaker of iPhone connects to the charging port cable. The idea of this trick is to check if the issue is associated with hardware or not.

  • Plug your iPhone in the USB port on your computer or a wall outlet for charging
  • Test your iPhone by calling it from the other device. Does it ring?
  • Now, unplug the lightning cable from the iPhone. Then call it again using a different device to check if it’s ringing or not.

If you hear a ringing sound when the iPhone is charged, but it doesn’t happen when it’s unplugged, likely it’s a hardware issue. The issue may occur on a lightning port that is connected to the speakers.

I know it’s silly to be sooooo happy to figure this out, but it’s so frustrating when something isn’t working as it should & you check all of the settings to no avail and it’s a useless button, why is it even there Apple?????
Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH, I WILL BE LESS ANNOYED TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE!!!?

  7. Super. Your suggestions helped. The silence button had flipped to red (silent) probably when I was fiddling putting the new case on a few days earlier. Thanks.

  8. Thank you for jogging my memory had this problem before thought I’d fixed it by jamming switch, glue must have fallen out

  9. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. The first trick worked. I knocked the silent switch when I out the phone in a lifeproof case. I was truly stumped until I found you article.

  10. Thanks from another reader…Just got iphone-7 3 days ago and phone was crazy. Fixed one problem, then it would vibrate but not ring. Did all your suggestions–nothing…then a complete closing (reboot?) It now rings with my happy Constellation ring again. Very helpful

  11. OMG! Thank you so much for a great article! My phone now rings because of you! My wall thanks you too, for preventing me from throwing my phone at it! ?

  12. Finally worked! I even took my phone to a computer shop today to try and sort this issue and they told me to restore it to factory settings and see if it would ring then. Still wouldn’t ring, so I went back to the internet to find something that I might not have tried yet, and this worked! My phone rings like it is meant to now, thank you so much!

  13. Hi
Tried everything except the total reboot and identified that it must be the speaker. My headphones worked and when they where not connected the bell showed ringer. As i had dropped my phone but didnt seem to have damaged it screen ok everything else worked i tried this. I held the phone between thumb and forfinger at the other end of the phone to the speaker holes and flicked the phone with my other hands finger like flicking a marble. lo and behold the speaker started to work again. Fingers crossed now that it stays fixed

  14. I have an Iphone 6 and sometimes speaker is not ringing(ringer volume is up and side button is in the ring state) ..When i restart the phone speaker is back to normal but after some hours is not ringing again so i restart again and again etc..i upgraded ios to the latest version still the same! I think its not a hardware problem cause it souldnt work after restart. Any advise?

    • Have you tried the other methods on the article? You can try to follow the next methods after update iOS, such as
“Reset All Settings”, “Erase iPhone” and “Restore iPhone”. But, make sure you have back up your iPhone data before you start those processes. Good luck!

  15. Thanks, the only thing that worked after trying many different things when I was not getting any sound for text messages was to change the ring tone for text messages!

  16. I have been a Samsung phone user and I needed a new phone so I just bought an iphone 7 and had the not ringing problem. Went to settings and checked and all seemed good. Then read your article and sure enough the left side top button was red which meant it was on mute. Went and switched it to the on or black mode and it now rings. However when it was on mute I did not see any half moon on the screen. Just wondering

  17. Wow. Great article. I am semi-savvy and well beyond falling for the “Do Not Disturb” feature, but imagine my surprise when I followed the suggestion, took my phone out of the protective case, only to find the ringer on/off switch had inadvertantly been turned to the “off” mode. I was ready to either trade in the phone at the 18 month mark of a 24 mo. plan or pay to have it repaired. Love that you start from the basics, then take the iPhone user from A to Z, but with a degree of thoroughness that is not found elsewhere. Thank you.

  18. Thank you, I have my first iPhone and it went silent after an update, but thanks to your article I easily fixed the problem – I didn’t know the silent button existed! Must have missed that bit of information or just forgotten it. Thanks again.

  19. After updating my 5S to iOS 10.1, I couldn’t hear any tones from calls, texts, alarm clock, etc. I checked all the settings mentioned above, but the only thing that ended up resolving the issue was a hard reboot (press & hold the home button and the top button until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo will appear next.) I had to enter my password in lieu of my fingerprint, and all seems back to normal. Thanks!

  20. Go to settings/general/accessibility/assistive touch/enable assistive touch/ touch the icon that shows up/touch “device”/ make sure the bell says “mute”. If it doesn’t, touch the bell and it will change to mute. try your phone now
