When your ASUS ROG Phone 9 goes silent, it can really throw off your gaming session or media experience. Sound issues can pop up for a few reasons, from simple settings to more stubborn software glitches. The good news is you can usually fix it yourself without too much hassle.

It is worth confirming the basics with a quick online speaker test. If neither channel plays a tone, you are looking at a hardware or connection problem rather than a settings issue.

Check Your Volume and Sound Mode

This is the quickest thing to try. While you're in a game or playing a video, press the volume up button on the side of your phone. Make sure you aren't in Silent or Vibration mode by checking the quick settings panel you pull down from the top of the screen.

For more control, go into Settings > Sound & vibration. Here, you can adjust the media, ringtone, and notification volumes individually. I'd slide them all up to make sure nothing is set to zero.

Disconnect Bluetooth and Accessories

Your ROG Phone 9 might be trying to send audio to a paired headset or speaker. Open the quick settings panel and tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off completely. If you use the AeroActive Cooler or any other gaming accessories, unplug them for a moment to see if sound returns to the phone's speakers.

Also, take a quick look at your case. Some bulky gaming cases can partially cover the front-firing stereo speakers, so removing it temporarily is a good test.

Review Game-Specific Audio Settings

Since this is a gaming phone, some audio controls are tucked into the gaming features. Open the Armoury Crate app and check your game profiles. Look for any audio settings like "Game Mode" that might have a mute option enabled.

Also, check the X Sense panel while in a game. Sometimes audio redirect settings or performance modes that prioritize frame rate can inadvertently affect sound output. Make sure nothing in there is set to mute game audio.

Clean the Speaker Grills

The front-facing speakers on the ROG Phone 9 can collect dust and pocket lint over time. Grab a soft, dry toothbrush or a clean, dry paintbrush and gently brush across the long speaker grills at the top and bottom of the screen.

You can use a can of compressed air, but hold it upright and use very short bursts from a few inches away. Never poke anything sharp like a pin or SIM tool into the grills, as you can easily damage the speakers behind them.

Check Do Not Disturb and App Permissions

Pull down your notification shade twice to see the full quick settings tiles. Look for the "Do Not Disturb" icon (a circle with a line through it) and make sure it's not active. If it is, tap it to turn it off.

Sometimes, a specific app might lose its permission to play sound. Go to Settings > Apps, select the app that's having no sound (like your music player or a game), then tap Permissions. Ensure the "Microphone" and nearby audio-related permissions are allowed.

Force Restart Your Phone

A simple reboot clears out temporary glitches. For the ASUS ROG Phone 9, press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the screen go black and the ASUS or ROG logo reappear, then let go.

This forces a full shutdown and restart, which can fix a lot of minor software hiccups causing audio problems. It doesn't delete any of your data or settings.

Clear the System Cache

Corrupted cache data from apps or the system can sometimes interfere with audio. You'll need to boot into recovery mode to clear it. First, turn your phone off completely.

Now, press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button together. Release both buttons when you see the ASUS logo. Use the volume buttons to navigate to the "Wipe cache partition" option, then press the power button to select it. Confirm, and then choose "Reboot system now."

Update Your Software

ASUS releases updates that often include bug fixes for issues just like this. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update."

If an update is available, download and install it. It's a good idea to be plugged into your 65W charger during this process, especially if the update is large. A fresh update can resolve conflicts that were causing the sound to fail.

Reset All Settings

If you're still having issues, you can reset all your system settings back to default without touching your personal files like photos and apps. Go to Settings > System > Reset options.

Tap "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth" or the broader "Reset all settings" option. Confirm your choice. After the phone reboots, you'll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and re-adjust settings like display brightness, but it often clears up persistent sound problems.
