A brief overview of the smartphone market highlights the tendency for manufacturers to launch phones with the large screen diagonal of more than 5″.
If the initial 4″-4.3″ phone screen seemed large enough for any activity, currently there are no major manufacturers that ignore the phone market with large screens. Although they are criticized for the large size and difficulty of use with one hand, such phones have caught on, which is why most top smartphones have such diagonal.
The trend is even more noticeable as the number of smartphones with leading hardware platforms and screens at most 4.3 ” is extremely low, which in fact has attracted criticism from users. In addition, there have been few recently launched smartphones with a screen of at least 5 ” and mid-level hardware platforms, meaning that users that don’t have the financial resources to purchase the best phones are turning to such products.
List of smartphones
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the fourth generation of the note series, which triggered the popularity of practical large-screen phones. Equipped with a SuperAMOLED display of 5.7″ and a 2560 × 1440 pixels resolution, Note 4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset with quad-core Krait 450 at 2.7 GHz, Adreno 420 graphics and 3GB RAM, while the internal memory is 32 GB. It also features a stylus for applications use.
iPhone 6 Plus
The next one is iPhone 6 Plus, a smartphone with an IPS screen with a diagonal of 5.5″ and Full HD 1920 × 1080 pixels resolution. Even if Apple is not impressing us with its hardware platform composed of a dual-core A8 processor at 1.4 GHz, PowerVR GX6450 graphics, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB for minimum data storage , the 6 Plus is one of the reference phones of the moment. The camera has 8 megapixels while the battery has a capacity of 2915 mAh.

It comes with a True HD IPS screen of 5.5″ QHD resolution at 2560 × 1440 pixels and has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and is available in two version: 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory or 3 GB RAM with 32 GB for data storage. In addition to very narrowed display frame, it also features an impressive and a unique positioning of the buttons on the back cover, under the camera.

HTC One M8 is one of the most popular mobile devices in terms of design and construction, but it does not disappoint on other chapters either. Samsung Galaxy S5 further relies on software to control the smartphone through gestures, some useful, some less useful. The hardware platform is provided by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3 GB RAM and 16 GB minimum for data storage. The phone is also waterproof and dust resistant ( ports are covered with plastic caps ) , while the camera has 20.7 MP.
Lenovo Vibe X2
Lenovo has recently come on the market and one of its top models is Vibe X2. With a 5″ IPS screen diagonal with the classical Full HD 1920 × 1080 pixel count, the Chinese phone benefits from the MediaTek hardware platform: an MT6595M octa-core quad-core processor consisting of an Cortex A17 2.0″ and quad- core Cortex A7 at 1.7 GHz, Power VR G600 graphics, 2 GB RAM and 32 GB of data storage. The camera has 13 MP and one of the few compromises were made to the battery, which has only 2300 mAh.
Manufactured by Motorola for Google, the Nexus 6 is a smartphone with an AMOLED screen of 5.96 ” 2560 × 1440 pixels resolution whose main quality is the hardware platform, one of the latest in the market. We’re talking about an 805 chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor at 2.7 GHz, Adreno 420 graphics, 3GB RAM and 32 GB minimum for data storage. The camera has 13 megapixels, while the Li-Po battery, which can not be replaced, has a generous capacity of 3220 mAh.

With a design similar to HTC One M8, Desire Eye has a screen of 5.2 ” with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, while the hardware platform is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with a quad-core processor with a frequency of 2.3 GHz. In addition, as is the case with many rivals, HTC Desire Eye is water and dust resistant within reasonable limits.
Nokia Lumia 930
Lumia 930 is one of the few powerful smartphones with a large screen and Windows Phone OS. It is benefiting from IPS display with a diagonal of 5″ and Full HD resolution and the daily use is made smooth thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and the 2 GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory. Its 20 MP camera is capable of recording Full HD, and the connectivity includes 4G technology.
Samsung Galaxy S7
Samsung’s latest flagship boasts of top notch specs and a brilliant 5.1-inch display. The waterproof design of the phone is very similar to the metal and glass finish of the S6. The phone boasts excellent performance because of the Samsung Exynos 8890 octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The 12-megapixel primary camera takes crisp pictures and the 5-megapixel secondary camera takes perfect selfies.
While some may complain about the non-removable battery, the reason we enjoy the sleek looks of the S7 is because of its irreplaceable battery. Everything about the phone speaks heaps of the amount of work Samsung has put to ensure that this seventh generation flagship is not passed on as just another phone.
There is no doubt that LG had a lot brewing since the G4 was introduced to the market. The company wanted its next phone to stand out in one way or another. So when the G5 came to the market, it inarguably stood out with its modular capabilities. But whether it is liked or not is another discussion. To begin with, the 5.3 inch display is brilliant and sharp.
The 2,800 mAh removable battery can be accessed via the modular component which is located at the bottom of the device. We like this new way of accessing the battery but critics may be divided in how good or bad it is. The 16 megapixel rear camera and the 8 megapixel front camera are very competent and produce excellent photos. Overall, the G5 is an absolutely powerful phone with some very interesting features that you may not want to miss.
The 5.2 inch HTC 10 is a phone that finally addresses some long drawn issues with HTC. The phone uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor along with 4GB RAM which gives it enough power to perform without lag. The display features a super LCD 5 which is meant to be outstanding but it somehow falls short of the Samsung Galaxy S7’s brilliant display. The 12 megapixel primary camera and the 5 megapixel secondary camera are capable of taking impressive photos.
The 3,000 mAh battery is reliable and will take you through the day without a charge. The HTC 10 aims at providing superb features and good looks, this is why we find it to be one of the best phones in the 5 inch or more category.
Xiaomi Mi 5
The Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 3D ceramic body which has 5.15 inch Full HD display. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 64 bit processor which ensures that the Mi 5 does not fall behind other top notch phones when it comes to performance. It is available in different storage capacities and you can also choose from four different colors – black, white, gold and pink. Because the phone does not support a microSD card you may want to be careful with what you choose so that you do not end up with the wrong storage capacity. We like the photos it takes with its 16MP rear camera and 4MP front camera. The Mi 5 is a dual SIM phone and it houses a 3,000 mAh battery which keeps it going for the entire day without a charge.
Sony Xperia X
The 5-inch Xperia X is another good phone with decent specs and nice aesthetics. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor which is paired with 3GB RAM. The internal storage of 32GB can be expanded to 2000 GB through a microSD card. The 23 megapixel primary camera and 13 megapixel secondary camera shoot absolutely wonderful pictures. The 2620 mAh battery seems to be below the expectations, especially for a phone that is packed with so many good features.
The smartphones with 5″ screens are enjoying a high popularity .
Even if they are difficult to use with one hand, large-screen phones offer a pleasant working experience in multimedia applications, games, and surfing the internet. Therefore, it is no surprise that almost every manufacturer has to offer at least one phone with the larger screen, and in the future, their offers will diversify even more.
