What makes Android so interesting and popular is the fact you can change just about everything. In other words, your phone can look completely different comparing to out of the box setting.

You can find apps set by default boring, and if that’s the case, nothing is stopping you from changing them. By going to Google Play, you can download and install the apps you want. You can change the home launcher, browser, messaging app, calling app, etc.

When you download the app, you may be asked if you want to use the app as default. You may download more than one application for the same purpose, such as messaging or calling apps. So, you will have to select the one as default. The choice is yours. To change default apps on Galaxy S8 (browser, calling, messaging and home screen app), follow these steps below:

  • Open the Settings app on your device
  • Now tap Apps
  • Next, tap three dots in the top-right corner to open the menu
  • Tap Default apps
  • You will see the apps set by default, such as home screen, messaging app, etc.

Let’s say you want to change the Home screen app. All you need to do is tap Home screen, and then select the app you want to use as default.

You can switch between apps anytime you want. If you don’t like the messaging app you just downloaded, download another one and set it as default, just repeat the steps above.

  1. I have the same problem as DP, Marc and others: when I want to change the contacts app, only the Samsung app is shown. For me is a big problem, because for many years I use Google Contacts, and I want to know that I can change a contact anywhere (in my desktop, tablet, on another continent, whatever), and be sure that he is there.
And no, the Samsung app didn’t syncronized all my old contacts, so I fear for the new ones.

  2. My S8 does not give me the option to select Google Contacts. It only gives me the Samsung Contacts app as an option. That sucks! I’m about to switch to Pixel…one platform + one OS = better user experience.

  3. There is almost nothing I can set as a default. Calendar, browser, email, etc…why even have this setting if I can’t use it?

  4. Thanks for the info! However, it seems that it is not possible to change the default contacts app to the Google Contacts app, as only Samsung’s own Contacts app is listed as possible default app. Right, or do I have to do something else first then?

    1. I’m having the same issue with trying to set a different default navigation app (Waze) and clock app (Google Clocks). What gives, Samsung?

      1. Having the same issues, but with Calendar instead of Google Calendar too.

Extremely disappointed with my first Samsung purchase – will not buy from them again and hope someone starts a class action anti-trust suit I can join.
