When your Samsung Galaxy S25+ shows a download button for a picture or video that just won't budge, it's a real nuisance. MMS messages still handle a lot of group chats and media from contacts on different platforms, so getting them working is key.
The problem usually comes down to a setting that got switched off, a network hiccup, or a temporary glitch in the messaging app itself. Since the S25+ runs Android 15 with One UI 7, the path to some settings might look a little different than on older models.
Let's walk through the fixes, starting with the simplest ones you can try in about thirty seconds.
Restart Your Galaxy S25+
It sounds too easy, but a restart clears out temporary software bugs that can block MMS downloads. For the S25+, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side key (power button) together for about ten seconds.
Keep holding until you see the Samsung logo appear on the screen. Once the phone boots back up, check your messages to see if the download works.
Check Your Mobile Data Connection
MMS doesn't download over Wi-Fi by itself, it needs an active mobile data connection. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel and make sure the Mobile Data icon is turned on.
Also, take a glance at your signal bars. If you're in a spot with weak service, try moving to a different location or room. A stronger signal often gets things moving.
Force Stop and Relaunch Messages
Sometimes the Samsung Messages app just needs a fresh start. Go to Settings > Apps, then find and tap on Messages.
On the app info page, tap Force Stop and confirm. Then, just open the Messages app again from your home screen. This clears its current state without affecting your texts.
Enable MMS Auto-Retrieve in Settings
This is one of the most common fixes. Your phone might be set to ask for permission before downloading MMS to save data. Open the Messages app, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and go to Settings.
Tap on Multimedia messages. Here, make sure the switch for Auto download is turned on. While you're here, if you travel, you might also want to enable Auto download while roaming.
Verify Your APN Settings
Incorrect Access Point Name (APN) settings from your carrier will break MMS. These settings tell your phone how to connect to your carrier's multimedia service.
Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. You should see a list, with one selected (usually your carrier's name).
If the list is empty or looks wrong, you'll need to get the correct APN details from your carrier's website or customer support and enter them manually by tapping the '+' icon.
Clear the Cache for the Messages App
Corrupted temporary files can cause download failures. Clearing the app's cache is a safe first step that won't delete your messages. Head back to Settings > Apps > Messages.
Tap on Storage and then tap Clear cache. After doing this, restart your phone once more and try downloading the MMS again.
Check for a Software Update
System bugs that affect messaging can be patched in updates. Samsung and your carrier release updates for the S25+ regularly. Go to Settings > Software update and tap Download and install.
If an update is available, let it install. Your phone will restart. I've seen minor updates specifically address network and messaging stability, so this is always worth a shot.
Reset Your Network Settings
This will wipe all your network connections, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile data settings, and can resolve deeper configuration conflicts. You'll have to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and re-pair Bluetooth devices afterward.
To do this, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings. Tap to confirm, and your phone will reboot. This doesn't erase any personal files or messages.
Try a Different Messaging App
If the problem persists only in the Samsung Messages app, the issue might be with the app itself. Download a different messaging app like Google Messages from the Play Store as a test.
Set it as your default app when prompted, and ask someone to send you an MMS. If it downloads fine in the new app, you know the problem is isolated to Samsung's app, and you can either keep using the new one or try clearing the Samsung app's data as a last resort.
Contact Your Mobile Carrier
If you've worked through all these steps and MMS still won't download, the issue is likely on your carrier's end. There could be a service outage in your area, a problem with your account provisioning, or they may need to refresh your connection on their network.
Give their customer support a call. They can check your line and often push updated network settings directly to your Galaxy S25+, which can solve the problem instantly.
