That little spinning circle in the middle of your show is a special kind of annoyance. When your Onn Google TV Stick keeps pausing video, it's usually a signal that something's getting in the way of a smooth stream. Let's get it sorted.
Restart Your Onn Stick and Router
This is the first thing I'd try. Unplug the power cable from your Onn Google TV Stick and from your router. Wait a full minute. Plug your router back in first and give it a couple of minutes to fully boot up. Then, plug your stick back in. This clears out any temporary glitches in both devices.
Check Your Internet Connection Speed
Streaming needs a steady flow of data. On your Onn Stick, go to the home screen, select your profile icon, then go to Settings > Network & Internet. Run the connection test there. For HD streaming, you'll want at least 5 Mbps. For 4K content, aim for 25 Mbps or more.
Move Your Router Closer or Use 5GHz WiFi
WiFi signals weaken through walls and over distance. If your router is far away, the connection can stutter. Try moving it closer if you can. Also, check if you're connected to the 2.4GHz band, which is slower and more crowded. Switch to your router's 5GHz network for a faster, cleaner signal.
Close Unused Apps on the Stick
The Onn Stick has a budget-friendly processor and limited storage. Having too many apps running in the background can slow everything down. From the home screen, press the circle button on your remote to see recent apps. Highlight any you're not using and press the down arrow to close them.
Clear the App Cache and Data
This is a great fix for the Onn Stick's limited 8GB storage. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find the app that's pausing (like Netflix or YouTube). Select it, then choose Clear cache. If that doesn't help, you can try Clear data, but note this will sign you out and reset the app's settings.
Lower the Streaming Video Quality
If your internet is having a slow moment, forcing a high-resolution stream will cause buffering. Open the settings within the streaming app itself. Look for a "Playback" or "Quality" setting and manually lower it from 4K to HD, or from HD to Standard Definition. This uses much less bandwidth.
Check for System and App Updates
Outdated software can cause performance hiccups. On the main home screen, go to your profile icon, then Settings > System > About > System update. Check for updates. Also, visit the Google Play Store on the stick to make sure all your streaming apps are up to date.
Reduce Network Competition
Is someone else in the house gaming online, on a video call, or downloading a huge file? All that activity eats into the bandwidth available for your stream. Ask them to pause heavy tasks, or schedule large downloads for later to see if it stops the pausing.
Try a Different Power Source
The Onn Stick needs stable power. If it's plugged into a USB port on your TV, that port might not provide enough consistent power, especially on older TVs. Always use the included power adapter and plug it directly into a wall outlet for the best performance.
Perform a Factory Reset
If nothing else has worked, a factory reset will wipe the stick back to its original settings. Go to Settings > System > About > Factory reset. Remember, this will erase all your apps, logins, and preferences, so you'll have to set everything up again from scratch.
