When your OnePlus 13 volume buttons stop responding, it's a real nuisance. You press them and get no feedback, no volume change, and no haptic click. The good news is this is often a temporary software hiccup, especially with early OxygenOS builds, and a simple restart can usually sort it out.

Before you consider a repair, run through these steps. I'd start with the force restart, as it clears up most minor glitches without touching your data.

Remove Your Phone Case

Begin with the simplest check. Take your OnePlus 13 out of its case. A case that's slightly misaligned or has worn padding can physically block the buttons from being fully pressed.

This is a common culprit, so it's worth eliminating first.

Perform a Force Restart

A force restart is the go-to fix for unresponsive buttons caused by a software freeze. It doesn't delete any of your apps or files.

For the OnePlus 13, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together for about 10 seconds. You'll feel the device vibrate and see the OnePlus logo appear as it reboots.

Once it's back on, test the volume buttons immediately.

Clean the Volume Buttons

Dust and pocket lint are frequent offenders for mechanical button issues. The slim design of the OnePlus 13 means even a small amount of debris can prevent the button from making proper contact.

Gently use a can of compressed air to blow around the edges of the buttons. For any sticky residue, lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) and carefully clean the seam.

Let it dry completely for a minute before testing again.

Check for Software Updates

Since the OnePlus 13 runs OxygenOS 15, early software versions can have bugs that affect hardware controls. OnePlus is typically quick to release updates that address these kinds of issues.

Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the top banner to check for updates. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery before installing.

Test the Buttons in Safe Mode

Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If your volume buttons work perfectly in Safe Mode, then a recently installed app is likely causing the conflict.

To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. It will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode, tap OK.

Test the buttons here. To exit, just restart your phone normally.

Use the On-Screen Volume Slider

While you're troubleshooting, you can still control your volume. Pull down the notification shade twice to open the Quick Settings panel, and you'll find a volume slider there.

You can also adjust media volume directly from within apps like YouTube or Spotify when content is playing.

Inspect for Physical Damage

Take a close look at the volume rocker. Has the phone been dropped recently? Even a small dent or crack near the button could indicate internal damage.

Also, listen and feel for a difference. A button that feels mushy or doesn't make its distinct click might have a damaged internal switch.

Check Accessibility Settings

Some accessibility features can remap or alter how the physical buttons function. It's worth verifying these settings haven't been changed accidentally.

Navigate to Settings > Additional settings > Accessibility. Look through options like "Volume key shortcut" or any button remapping services and ensure they're set to your preference.

Try a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If all else fails, a factory reset can eliminate deep-seated software corruption. This will erase everything on your phone, so you must back up your data first using Google One or the OnePlus Clone Phone app.

To reset, go to Settings > Additional settings > Backup & reset > Erase all data (factory reset). Follow the prompts, and after the reset is complete, set up your phone as new to test the buttons before restoring your backup.
