When your OnePlus 12 won't send messages, it's one of the most frustrating things that can happen. You might see them stuck on "Sending," get a failure notification, or nothing happens at all. The fixes are usually straightforward, and we'll start with the most common one.

Toggle Airplane Mode

This is the quickest fix to try. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel and tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it on. Wait about 15 seconds, then tap it again to turn it off. This forces your phone to reconnect to your cellular network, which can clear up any temporary glitch preventing messages from going through.

Check Your Mobile Data and Signal

For standard SMS texts, you need a cellular signal. Look at the signal bars in the top right corner. If they're low or missing, try moving to a different location. For MMS (picture messages and group chats), you also need mobile data to be enabled. Swipe down and make sure your mobile data icon is active.

If you're using RCS chats (Chat features), those require a data connection too, either mobile data or Wi-Fi. I'd check this first if your messages are failing only when sending photos or in specific group conversations.

Force Restart Your OnePlus 12

A simple restart clears out temporary software bugs. Press and hold the Power button for 10 to 15 seconds until you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo appear. This is often enough to get messaging services running smoothly again.

Verify Your Default Messaging App

If you've installed other messaging apps, your phone might be confused about which one to use. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Tap on "SMS app" and make sure your preferred app, like Google Messages or the OnePlus Messages app, is selected.

Clear the Cache for Your Messaging App

Corrupted temporary data can cause sending failures. Go to Settings > Apps and find your messaging app (e.g., Google Messages). Tap on it, then go to Storage & cache. Tap Clear cache. This won't delete your messages, but it can resolve odd app behavior.

On the app's storage screen, tap Clear cache (Android 16, Pixel emulator; Camera shown as the example app).

Check for Carrier Services Updates

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Manage > Updates available. Look for an app called "Carrier Services" and update it if it's listed. This app handles communication between your phone and your carrier's network for messaging.

Review Your APN Settings

Incorrect Access Point Name (APN) settings can break MMS. Go to Settings > Mobile network > SIM & network > Access Point Names. Your carrier's correct APN should already be listed and selected. If not, or if the settings look wrong, you'll need to get the correct APN details from your carrier's website and enter them here.

Turn Off Chat Features (RCS)

If you're using Google Messages and have RCS (Chat features) enabled, try disabling it temporarily. Open the Google Messages app, tap your profile picture, go to Messages settings > RCS chats, and turn off Enable chat features. Try sending a message. If it works, there's an issue with the RCS connection that often resolves itself if you toggle it back on later.

Reset Your Network Settings

This is a more thorough step that resets all network-related configurations. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Backup & reset > Reset phone > Reset network settings. Confirm the reset. Your phone will reboot, and you'll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and re-pair Bluetooth devices, but it can fix deep-seated network and messaging problems.

Contact Your Mobile Carrier

If you've tried everything and messages still won't send, the issue might be on your carrier's end. There could be a service outage in your area, a problem with your account provisioning, or SMS/MMS might be blocked on your line. A quick call to their support can confirm if the issue is on their side.
