When your OnePlus 12's email stops syncing or sending, it can throw a wrench in your whole day. You might miss an important work message or fail to send a time-sensitive reply. The good news is that most email problems on OxygenOS are caused by a few common settings that are easy to check.

Before you try anything complicated, run through these quick checks. First, make sure you have a solid internet connection, either on Wi-Fi or mobile data. Next, verify your email service isn't having a widespread outage by checking their status page or trying to log in on a computer.

Finally, double-check that you're using the correct email address and password. A simple typo can be the culprit.

Restart the Email App

This is often the fastest fix for a glitchy app. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and hold to enter the recent apps view. Find your email app, whether it's Gmail, Outlook, or the built-in OnePlus Email app, and swipe it up to close it completely.

Wait a few seconds, then tap the app icon to reopen it. This clears the app's temporary memory and can resolve minor sync or display issues instantly. I'd start with this one every time.

Check Your Sync and Fetch Settings

Your phone controls how often it checks for new emails. If these settings are too conservative, you won't get messages in real time. Open the Settings app and go to Accounts & backup > Manage accounts.

Select your email account and look for a sync or data usage option. Make sure sync is turned on for Mail. For more granular control, open your specific email app and dive into its settings menu. Look for a "Sync frequency," "Fetch schedule," or "Data usage" section.

Set it to "Push" if available, which delivers emails instantly. If Push isn't an option, choose the shortest fetch interval, like every 15 minutes. Some apps also have a "Sync now" or "Refresh" button you can tap manually.

Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data

Sometimes the problem is with your network, not your phone. If emails aren't coming through on Wi-Fi, try turning it off to force the phone to use your cellular connection. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the full Quick Settings panel and tap the Wi-Fi icon to turn it off.

Open your email app and pull down to refresh. If it works on mobile data, the issue is likely with your Wi-Fi network. You can try restarting your router. Conversely, if mobile data isn't working, go to Settings > Mobile network and ensure mobile data is enabled and you have a strong signal.

Toggle Airplane Mode

This is a great way to quickly reset all your phone's radio connections. Swipe down from the top to open the Quick Settings panel and tap the Airplane mode icon. Wait for about 15 to 20 seconds for all connections to fully disable.

Then, tap the Airplane mode icon again to turn it off. Your phone will re-establish connections to Wi-Fi and cellular networks, which can clear up any temporary communication errors that were blocking your email.

Verify Your Email Account Password

Passwords can expire, especially for work or school accounts. The simplest test is to open a web browser on your phone or computer and try to log into your email account's website. If you can't log in there, you'll need to reset your password through your email provider.

Once you have a new password, you need to update it on your OnePlus 12. Go to Settings > Accounts & backup > Manage accounts. Tap your email account, then tap Account sync or More (three dots). Look for an option to update your password or re-enter your account credentials.

Enable Background Data for the Email App

To receive emails automatically, the app needs permission to use data in the background. Go to Settings > Apps. Find and tap your email app in the list, then select Data usage.

Make sure both "Background data" and "Unrestricted data usage" are toggled on. This allows the app to check for new messages even when you're not actively using it. Some Android versions may call this "Allow background activity" in the app's battery settings.

Check for App Updates

Outdated apps can have bugs that break functionality. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture in the top right, and go to Manage apps & device. Under "Updates available," see if your email app is listed.

If it is, tap "Update" next to it. Developers frequently release updates to fix sync issues and improve stability. This applies whether you use Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, or any other third-party client.

Review Your Notification Settings

If emails are arriving but you're not getting sound or vibration alerts, the notification settings might be muted. Long-press on your email app's icon on the home screen and tap App info. Alternatively, go through Settings > Apps.

Tap Notifications. Here, ensure notifications are turned on for the app globally. You can then tap into specific notification categories, like "New mail" or "Incoming messages," to make sure they are enabled and set to a visible alert style like "Sound and pop-up."

Set Date and Time to Automatic

Incorrect time settings can cause security certificate errors that prevent your phone from connecting to your email server. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Date & time.

Make sure "Use network-provided time" and "Use network-provided time zone" are both switched on. This ensures your phone's clock is perfectly synchronized, which is critical for secure communication with email services.

Disable Any Active VPN

A VPN is great for privacy, but it can sometimes interfere with the specific ports or protocols your email service uses. If you have a VPN app running, open it and disconnect from the VPN server.

You can also check the Quick Settings panel for a VPN tile. Once disconnected, try sending or refreshing your email. If it starts working, you may need to adjust your VPN's settings or use a split-tunneling feature to exclude your email app from the VPN connection.

Remove and Re-add Your Email Account

This refreshes the connection between your phone and the email server and can fix corrupted account data. Go to Settings > Accounts & backup > Manage accounts. Tap the problematic email account.

Tap Remove account at the bottom and confirm. Don't worry, this only removes the account from your phone, not from the email service itself. After it's removed, go back to "Manage accounts," tap "Add account," and follow the steps to set it up again. You'll need your email address and password handy.

Force Restart Your OnePlus 12

A full reboot can clear out system-level glitches affecting multiple apps, including email. Press and hold the Power button on the right side of the phone for about 10 to 15 seconds.

Keep holding until you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo appear on the screen, then release. This forces the phone to shut down and restart, which is more thorough than a standard restart. Once it boots back up, check if your email is flowing again.

Check for a System Software Update

OnePlus regularly releases OxygenOS updates that include bug fixes and performance improvements. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version. Tap the top banner where it says "Check for update."

If an update is available, it's a good idea to download and install it. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least a 50% charge, or better yet, plug it into the included 100W SUPERVOOC charger first. An update can resolve email issues caused by the operating system itself.

Reset Your Network Settings

This is a more involved step, but it can fix persistent connectivity problems that affect email and other online apps. It will erase all your saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and mobile data settings. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset.

Tap Reset phone, then select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. Confirm your PIN or password if prompted. After the reset, you'll need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi and re-pair Bluetooth devices, but your personal data and apps will remain untouched.
