When the flashlight on your Nothing Phone (3) is grayed out in the quick settings panel, it's a surprisingly common hiccup. You tap the icon and nothing happens, leaving you in the dark. Let's get that light working again.
Close the Camera App First
The camera and flashlight share the same LED hardware on the back. If your camera app is open, even just running in the background, the system reserves the flash module for it. Swipe up from the bottom to enter the recent apps view and swipe the Camera app away to fully close it. The flashlight icon should instantly become available again.
Perform a Quick Restart
A simple restart clears out any temporary software glitches that might be locking the flashlight controls. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons together for about 10 to 15 seconds. Let go when you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen. Once your phone boots back up, check the flashlight.
Check Your Battery Saver Mode
While Battery Saver mode on Nothing OS primarily limits background activity, it can sometimes make system features like the flashlight less responsive to conserve power. Pull down your notification shade twice to open the full quick settings panel and look for the battery saver icon. If it's enabled, tap it to turn it off and then try the flashlight toggle.
Let Your Phone Cool Down
If your Nothing Phone (3) has been working hard or charging in a warm environment, it might have overheated. As a protective measure, the system will disable certain functions, including the flashlight. If the back of the phone feels unusually warm to the touch, power it down and let it sit in a cooler spot for 10-15 minutes. The feature should return once the temperature drops.
Try a Google Assistant Command
You can bypass the quick settings toggle entirely by using your voice. Say "Hey Google, turn on the flashlight." If the Assistant can activate the light but the manual button remains grayed out, it points to a minor interface bug. A simple restart, as mentioned earlier, is usually the fix for that.
Adjust the Flashlight Brightness
On Nothing OS, you might be able to adjust the flashlight intensity. Instead of just tapping the quick settings icon, try pressing and holding it. If a small menu or slider pops up, make sure the brightness isn't set to its absolute minimum, which could make the light seem off in a bright room. Slide it up to the maximum setting.
Update Nothing OS
Software bugs that affect hardware controls like the flashlight are often patched in updates. Head to Settings > System > System update and tap 'Check for update'. Install any available update for Nothing OS. I've seen minor system glitches get resolved this way on previous models.
Reset App Preferences
This is a less nuclear option than a full reset. It resets permissions and background data restrictions for all your apps, which can sometimes free up a system resource conflict. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Menu (three dots) > Reset app preferences. Confirm the action. You'll need to re-grant permissions to apps later, but your personal data stays safe.
Test the Camera Flash
If the software fixes don't work, it's time to check the hardware. Open your Camera app and switch to a photo mode, then try taking a picture with the flash forced on. If the flash doesn't fire for photos either, the LED hardware itself could be faulty. Since the Phone (3) is a new device, this would be covered under warranty, and you should contact Nothing support for service options.
