When your Nothing Phone 2a is crawling online, it can feel like you're stuck in the past. Videos buffer, pages hang, and simple tasks become a chore. I've found that on Nothing OS, the fix is often a quick setting change or two away from getting your speed back.
Let's start with the most common culprit. If you're on mobile data, your phone might be clinging to a weak 4G signal when 5G is available, or vice versa. You can check and adjust this in your network settings.
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Tap on your active SIM card and then select Preferred network type. Try switching this to "5G/4G/3G/2G (auto)" if it's not already selected. Sometimes forcing it to "4G/3G/2G (auto)" can be more stable if 5G coverage is spotty in your area.
Reset Your Network Settings
If you're still facing issues across both WiFi and mobile data, a network settings reset is a strong next step. This clears all saved WiFi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular preferences back to factory defaults.
Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Here, tap on Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. You'll need to enter your PIN or pattern to confirm. After the reset, you'll have to reconnect to your WiFi and re-pair any Bluetooth devices, but it often clears up persistent connection gremlins.
Manage Your Data Usage and Background Activity
Nothing OS includes a Data Saver feature that's really useful. When enabled, it restricts background data for most apps, which can free up bandwidth for what you're actively doing. You can find it under Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver.
You can also review which apps are using the most data. Head to Settings > Network & internet > Data usage. Tap on "App data usage" to see a breakdown. If a social media or streaming app is using a surprising amount in the background, you can tap on it and restrict its background data individually.
Check and Clear Your Browser Cache
If slow speeds seem specific to web browsing, your browser's cache might be bogged down. For Chrome, which is common on Android, open the app and tap the three-dot menu in the top right. Go to History > Clear browsing data.
On the next screen, select a time range like "Last hour" or "All time." Make sure "Cached images and files" is checked. You can leave "Cookies and site data" unchecked if you want to stay logged into sites. Tap "Clear data" to finish. This clears out temporary files that can sometimes slow down page loading.
Forget and Reconnect to Problematic WiFi
A slow or unstable WiFi connection is a frequent offender. If one network in particular is giving you trouble, try forgetting it and setting it up fresh. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
Tap the settings cog next to the troublesome network. At the bottom of the menu, tap Forget. Then, simply reselect the network from the list and enter the password again. This establishes a clean connection and can resolve authentication or IP address conflicts.
Disable Any Active VPN Connections
While VPNs are great for privacy, they route your traffic through another server, which can significantly slow things down. If you have a VPN app running, try disabling it temporarily to test your speed.
You can usually do this by opening the VPN app and tapping the disconnect button. If you're not sure, swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the full Quick Settings panel. Look for a VPN tile or notification that you can toggle off.
Ensure Your Software is Up to Date
Nothing regularly releases updates for Nothing OS that can include connectivity improvements and bug fixes. It's worth checking if you're running the latest version.
Go to Settings > System > System update. Tap "Check for update." If an update is available, I'd recommend connecting to WiFi and installing it. These updates often address performance and network-related issues reported by users.
Perform a Simple Restart
Never underestimate the power of turning it off and on again. A restart clears the phone's temporary memory and can fix minor software glitches affecting the modem or network stack.
Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart." For a more forceful reset if the phone is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until you see the Nothing logo appear and the phone reboots.
