Samsung is shrinking the selfie camera hole on the Galaxy Z Fold 8's cover screen by a third, a move that boosts screen immersion but may force camera compromises the company has so far avoided on its other flagships.

Tipster Ice Universe says the external punch-hole cutout measures just 2.5mm in diameter, down from 3.7mm on the Fold 7. That is a 33% reduction in size, achieved through new display technology that keeps the camera hardware itself unchanged. The change applies to the cover display only, not the internal under-display selfie camera. Samsung is expected to launch the Fold 8 in July.

Shrinking a lens opening by that margin without changing the sensor raises questions about image quality. The Fold 7 uses a 10MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and 1/3.0-inch optical format. A smaller aperture or reduced field of view could hurt low-light performance, forcing users to rely on the rear cameras for selfies in dim conditions. The decision stands in contrast to Samsung's approach on its slab flagship. The Galaxy S26 Ultra received a larger camera cutout this year, reportedly for a wider field of view. The bezels around both openings are identical, meaning Samsung either eliminated them entirely on the Fold 8 or altered its camera module design.

CAD-based renders of the Fold 8 show a familiar overall silhouette with minimal design changes beyond the tighter hole-punch. The device will compete directly with Apple's first foldable, expected to arrive as the iPhone Ultra later this year.
