Nintendo is resurrecting Mario's most forgotten enemies for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, confirming two obscure villains from 1988's Super Mario Bros. 2 will appear in next month's animated sequel.

A new poster released today reveals Wart and Mouser joining the cast, characters that debuted nearly four decades ago and have barely appeared in official Mario releases since. The artwork shows them alongside established faces like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, and Birdo.

The villain confirmation comes ahead of a dedicated Nintendo Direct scheduled for Monday, March 9 at 2pm PT/5pm ET/10pm GMT. The presentation will feature the final trailer before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 1.

Wart served as the primary antagonist in Super Mario Bros. 2, attempting to conquer Subcon with his gang known as the 8 bits. Mouser appeared as a recurring boss fight in the same game.

Their inclusion signals Nintendo's willingness to mine deeper cuts from Mario's history rather than relying solely on mainstream characters.

This marks another movie-focused Direct following January's presentation that revealed Birdo would appear alongside returning characters Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. Nintendo confirmed no game information will be included in next week's showcase.

The sequel brings back Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors with Matthew Fogel returning as screenwriter and Brian Tyler as composer. Three major new characters have been officially confirmed: Bowser Jr voiced by filmmaker Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems), Rosalina played by Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), and Yoshi.

Chris Pratt returns as Mario alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1 billion worldwide following its April 2023 release.

Monday's Direct arrives one day before official Mario Day celebrations on March 10, which coincides with the franchise's 40th anniversary this year.
