Microsoft pulled the trigger on a Fable delay that industry insiders had been predicting for weeks, pushing Playground Games' reboot from fall 2026 to February 2027. The stated reason is rare candor from a major publisher: GTA VI and Microsoft's own stacked lineup made the holiday window too dangerous.

"Grand Theft Auto VI" lands November 19. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" arrives October 23, announced just this week.

Add "Halo: Campaign Evolved," "Gears of War: E-Day," and "Star Wars: Galactic Racer" (October 6), and the fall calendar leaves zero room for a single-player fantasy RPG to breathe.

Xbox confirmed the delay in a post on X on May 29, writing that Fable needed "the dedicated moment it deserves" rather than competing for attention through the holidays. The Verge reported the shift from an autumn 2026 window to a February 2027 launch. The decision validates reporting from Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb last month, who said Microsoft was worried about Fable "running up against the behemoth that is GTA 6." Grubb had heard internally that the RPG was being pushed back, though the official Fable account denied it at the time. The delay is now official.

Fable, first announced in 2020 as a "new beginning" for the series, has already slipped once from a 2025 target to 2026. This second delay pushes it past the six-year mark since reveal.

It launches on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5.

Microsoft plans to show a "major new look" at Fable during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. The event will also feature Gears of War: E-Day and presumably solid release dates for Halo: Campaign Evolved and other first-party titles.

Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty confirmed in an Official Xbox Podcast episode released Friday that the June showcase will not include news about Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox console. Microsoft promised Helix details "later this year."
