Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models will reportedly gain variable aperture camera technology this fall, giving photographers unprecedented control over depth of field in smartphone images. The feature, expected to arrive with both Pro and Pro Max variants, marks Apple's first move into adjustable lens apertures for its flagship phones.

Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station revealed today that Apple has four camera upgrades in development, with variable aperture leading the list for iPhone 18 Pro's launch later this year.

The technology allows users to adjust how much light enters the lens while controlling background blur, offering shallow depth of field for subject isolation, medium settings for recognizable backgrounds, or deep focus where everything remains sharp.

Some earlier reports suggested variable aperture might be exclusive to the larger Pro Max model, but current leaks indicate both Pro versions will receive the upgrade. iOS 27's Camera app will likely include intuitive controls for adjusting aperture settings, making professional-grade photography accessible to mainstream users.

Beyond this year's variable aperture addition, Digital Chat Station outlined three more camera improvements in Apple's pipeline: a 1/1.12-inch extra-large main sensor, enhanced optical image stabilization for ultra-wide lenses, and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.

While timing for these features remains unclear, they represent Apple's continued push to dominate mobile photography.

The iPhone 18 Pro series will also introduce a refined color palette with four finishes: dark gray, dark cherry, light blue, and silver. The dark gray option features near-black matte glass paired with a titanium frame, creating what leaks describe as a "stealthy, refined look" targeting professionals who prefer understated aesthetics.

Separately, Apple's first foldable iPhone will prioritize camera functionality through a dedicated Camera Control button despite its ultra-thin design. According to leaker Instant Digital, Apple made engineering compromises to include this feature on a device that measures at least 1.1mm thinner than the iPhone Air when unfolded.

The foldable model will be eSIM-only across all regions and launch alongside iPhone 18 Pro models this fall. Production estimates suggest approximately 10 million units in the first year, with pricing expected between $2,060 and $2,750.
