Google accidentally published the livestream link last month. Now it's official: The Android Show | I/O Edition arrives May 12 at 10 AM PT, a week before Google I/O 2026 kicks off on May 19. The pre-recorded show, streamed on YouTube, exists for a specific reason: Google wants Android updates to breathe without getting buried under the AI avalanche that will dominate I/O proper. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, is expected to host again after leading last year's debut.
Google is promising "one of the biggest years for Android yet." The evidence is stacking up.
Android 17 is in its final testing phase with a stable release expected in June. The show could reveal previously unannounced features, including rumored additions like gaming controller remapping and running apps in bubbles for better multitasking. The bigger story is Android XR. After teasing the platform at I/O 2025, Google is expected to detail its smartglasses push.
Partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are already locked in, and multiple companies are preparing Android XR glasses for launch this year. Samsung's Galaxy XR is currently the only device on the market, but XREAL Project Aura and other entrants are coming.
Then there's Aluminium OS, Google's internal codename for the ChromeOS and Android merger. Google confirmed the unified operating system will show up this year, and Samsung is reportedly working on low-end, mid-range, and flagship Galaxy Book laptops powered by it. The Android Show could offer the first official look at what this OS actually is, including its proper name.
Last year's show set the template: Material 3 Expressive, Wear OS 6, Gemini expansion across platforms, scam and fraud detection, key verifier in Google Messages, and the Find Hub all dropped during the stream. Expect a similar mix of consumer-facing announcements this time, with deeper developer details saved for I/O. The livestream is free on YouTube and the Android homepage. Android 17 ships in June.
