Google updated the VPN by Google Quick Settings tile on Pixel phones, adding visible connection status that eliminates the need to open the app.
The 2×1 tile now displays one of four statuses: Connected, Paused, Connecting, or Can't connect. Previously, the tile showed "VPN by Google" twice without indicating connection state, requiring users to long-press or open the app for verification.
This server-side update began rolling out this week with version 2025.12.19.x of VPN by Google. The status information was already available within the app but required navigating through menus to access.
This update follows Google's recent final Android 16 beta release for Pixel devices.
Pixel 7 and newer device owners, including the Pixel Tablet, receive the built-in VPN service at no extra cost. The feature protects connections on public WiFi networks by hiding internet activity and keeping IP addresses private from websites and apps.
"Google claims the VPN doesn't track or log browsing activity,"
though it lacks advanced features like region spoofing found in paid services. The update makes basic connection verification faster for users who frequently use public hotspots.
The tile changes color when active, filling with color when connected and reverting to a lighter hue when disconnected. A compact 1×1 tile remains available but doesn't show status due to space constraints.
VPN by Google replaced the previous VPN by Google One service and remains exclusive to Pixel devices. Samsung Galaxy and Motorola users must rely on third-party VPN alternatives.
