Google Maps users can now ask complex questions like "where can I charge my phone without waiting in line for coffee" or "is there a public tennis court with lights on tonight" through a new conversational AI feature called Ask Maps.

The integration of Gemini models transforms the navigation app into an interactive assistant capable of answering queries that traditional maps couldn't handle. The Ask Maps feature taps into information from over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors to provide personalized responses.

Users access the functionality through a dedicated button within the app, receiving answers conversationally alongside customized maps visualizing their options.

This marks Google's most significant navigation upgrade in over a decade, fundamentally changing what users expect from mapping software. Instead of just providing directions, Maps now analyzes trip itineraries to suggest recommended stops along routes, offering clear directions, estimated arrival times, and insider tips from real people.

For travelers planning multi-destination trips, the system can build complete itineraries by pulling data about attractions like the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes. It provides practical advice such as how to find hidden hiking trails or secure free entry tickets.

The Gemini integration arrives alongside broader AI updates across Google's productivity suite. Earlier this week, the company announced similar conversational capabilities for Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive through its Workspace platform. These tools allow business users to generate documents and presentations by describing what they need in natural language.

Google's simultaneous rollout of AI features across consumer and enterprise products signals an aggressive push to embed generative AI throughout its ecosystem.

The Maps update specifically targets everyday scenarios where users need contextual information beyond basic navigation.

Initial availability focuses on key markets including India and the United States, with global expansion expected following regional testing phases.

"Ask Maps is uniquely helpful because it personalizes responses based on individual user contexts while making it easy to turn plans into immediate action."
