A dedicated Gemini app for macOS entered private testing this week, bringing Google's AI assistant closer to system-level integration on Apple computers. The native application includes a "Desktop Intelligence" feature that allows Gemini to read screen content and interact with other Mac applications.

Google seeded an early version of the Gemini for Mac app to private beta testers, according to Bloomberg. The move follows established desktop AI competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, which already offer native macOS applications.

Currently, Mac users must access Gemini through a web browser.

The standout capability is Desktop Intelligence, which enables Gemini "to see what you see (such as screen context) and pull content directly from these apps," Digital Trends reports. This system-level access would allow the AI tool to understand what other applications are running and provide context-aware assistance without requiring manual file uploads or switching between windows.

Similar functionality exists in Anthropic's Claude Cowork feature, but Google's implementation appears designed for deeper macOS integration. The Desktop Intelligence capability mirrors how ChatGPT can connect with apps on macOS through Apple's system frameworks.

Private testing began this week with participants in Google's consumer beta program. The current version remains early and doesn't include all planned features, but it represents Google's push toward desktop AI parity with its main competitors.

No public release timeline has been established, though development appears independent of Apple's forthcoming Foundation Models trained by Gemini.

The native app would enable direct file uploads and potentially access personal data stored locally on Mac devices. This contrasts with web-based access that requires manual file selection through browser interfaces.

Google I/O is scheduled for May 19, 20, making an announcement around that time plausible according to Cult of Mac. However, the company could release the application sooner since it doesn't depend on Apple announcing new AI frameworks.
