Google announced Android theft protection updates on January 27, 2026, adding stronger authentication safeguards and smarter lockout features. The updates include enhancements for devices running Android 10 and newer, with stronger authentication safeguards requiring Android 16 or newer.

The company introduced a dedicated toggle for Failed Authentication Lock, which previously operated without user control. Android 15 users can now enable or disable automatic screen locking after excessive failed authentication attempts through a new settings option.

Google expanded Identity Check coverage to all features using Android Biometric Prompt. This extension, which began in early 2025, now protects third-party banking apps and Google Password Manager with mandatory biometric verification for sensitive operations outside trusted locations.

Lockout times increase significantly after repeated biometric failures, making PIN, pattern, or password guessing more difficult for thieves. The system excludes identical incorrect guesses from retry limits to prevent accidental lockouts by children or repeated mistakes.

Remote Lock receives an optional security challenge when accessing android.com/lock from any web browser. Users must answer a security question before locking stolen devices, adding verification that only legitimate owners can initiate remote locks.

Brazilian users gain two security settings enabled by default: Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock. The theft detection feature identifies when devices are snatched from hands in likely theft situations, while Remote Lock provides immediate protection without manual setup.

The updates represent what Google describes as "multi-layered defenses" against device theft. Enhanced recovery tools work on Android 10+ devices, while newer safeguard options require Android 16.

Google indicated more theft protection updates will follow, stating users should "keep a lookout for even more Android theft protection updates" in future releases.
