Night City gets a serious visual upgrade tomorrow as CD Projekt Red reverses its earlier stance on PlayStation 5 Pro support. The developer once said it had no plans to use the console's extra power, but now delivers a free update that unlocks 4K visuals and advanced ray tracing for Cyberpunk 2077 owners.
The update arrives on April 8 with three distinct graphics modes optimized for Sony's souped-up hardware. Performance mode focuses on frame rate with no ray tracing enabled, reaching up to 90 frames per second on VRR-enabled displays.
Ray Tracing mode offers select ray tracing enhancements while maintaining 60 frames per second. Ray Tracing Pro enables all available ray tracing enhancements, targeting 40 frames per second on VRR-enabled displays or 30 frames per second otherwise for what CDPR calls "the most visually advanced version" of the game.
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology powers the visual improvements alongside BVH8 support for more advanced ray-traced lighting.
"Every inch of Night City, every thermal katana, every gonk on the street, every supercharged sports car, comes to life."
Global Art Director Kuba Knapik described the result as "incredible."
CD Projekt Red's reversal comes after sustained player demand following the PS5 Pro's launch last year. The timing coincides with Sony's recent price increase for its premium console, which jumped from $750 to $900 earlier this month after originally retailing for $700.
Cyberpunk 2077 remains available at no extra cost through PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, giving subscribers immediate access to tomorrow's visual overhaul without additional purchase requirements.
