Apple's next major iOS update will transform the iPhone keyboard into a writing assistant that suggests alternative words alongside traditional autocorrections, moving beyond simple typo fixes to compete with dedicated apps like Grammarly.
The iOS 27 feature expands autocorrection by offering word choice suggestions powered by Apple Intelligence, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Instead of just correcting misspelled words, the system will propose different vocabulary options as users type.
Apple has tested the enhanced keyboard internally but hasn't made a final decision on its release. If approved, it would debut with iOS 27 this fall alongside broader Siri improvements that allow handling multiple requests in single queries.
The first developer beta of iOS 27 is expected in June, with the public release following in September after Apple unveils its iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The software could receive its official preview at WWDC 2026.
This keyboard upgrade builds on recent improvements to typing accuracy. iOS 26.4, released last week, already "improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly," according to Apple's release notes.
Most iPhones from 2019 onward will support iOS 27, continuing Apple's pattern of providing five to seven years of major software updates for its devices. The iPhone 11 remains compatible with current iOS versions despite launching nearly seven years ago.
The alternative words feature represents Apple's latest push to integrate AI capabilities directly into core system functions rather than requiring separate apps. It follows the company's broader strategy of embedding intelligence throughout its operating systems.
