A black screen on your iPad Air M3 is alarming, but it doesn't necessarily mean the tablet is dead. The display might be unresponsive while the iPad is still running, or a software crash may have frozen everything. Here's how to bring it back to life.
Force Restart Your iPad Air M3
This is the first thing to try. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears. Keep holding even if the screen stays black for 10-15 seconds. The Apple logo will appear when the restart kicks in, and this works even when the screen is completely unresponsive.
Charge the iPad and Check the Adapter
A completely drained battery can cause a black screen. Plug your iPad Air M3 into the charger using the included USB-C cable and a 20W or higher USB-C PD adapter. Wait at least 15-30 minutes before trying anything, since a deeply discharged battery may take a while before the charging indicator appears.
The iPad Air M3 is known to have trouble charging with low-power adapters. If you see Not Charging on the lock screen, swap to a higher-wattage USB-C PD adapter. Using non-certified cables can also cause charging problems, so stick with Apple's cable or a reputable third-party one.
Let It Charge After a Deep Discharge
If the battery was fully dead for a while, the iPad may show an incorrect battery percentage at first. Keep it connected to power for 10-20 minutes even if nothing appears on screen. In some cases, the display stays black until the battery has enough charge to power the screen back on. Give it a full half hour before giving up.
Check for Physical Damage
Look closely at the screen for cracks, dark spots, or signs of impact. If the iPad makes sounds when you receive notifications or responds to Siri when you hold the Top button, the tablet is working but the display hardware may be damaged. In that case, you'll need a screen repair from Apple or an authorized service provider.
Adjust Screen Brightness
Sometimes the screen appears black because the brightness is set to minimum. Ask Siri to "turn up the brightness" or swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and drag the brightness slider up. If your iPad has an auto-brightness glitch after an iPadOS update, this can look like a black screen at first glance.
Restore with a Computer
If force restart doesn't work, connect your iPad Air M3 to a Mac or PC. Open Finder on a Mac or iTunes on a Windows computer. If the computer detects your iPad, click Update first, which reinstalls iPadOS without erasing your data. If that fails, use Restore, which erases everything and reinstalls the operating system from scratch.
Put the iPad in Recovery Mode
If your computer doesn't detect the iPad normally, put it in recovery mode. Connect the cable to your computer first. Then quickly press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Top button. Keep holding past the Apple logo until you see the recovery mode screen (a cable pointing to a computer icon). Your computer will then offer to Update or Restore the iPad.
Check for Water or Moisture Damage
If your iPad Air M3 was recently exposed to water, the black screen may be caused by moisture in the display connector. Power off the iPad immediately and let it dry completely for at least 24-48 hours. Don't use a hair dryer or put it in rice, as rice dust can cause more damage. If the screen doesn't come back after drying, liquid damage may require professional repair.
Avoid Cheap Accessories for Future Issues
One of the most common causes of charging-related black screens on the iPad Air M3 is using low-quality cables and adapters. Apple's USB-C implementation can be picky with non-certified accessories. Stick with high-quality, MFi-certified cables and a 20W or higher USB-C PD adapter to prevent future charging problems and sudden black screens.
