When your HP Pavilion 15's camera shows a black screen or isn't detected by Zoom or Teams, it can stop a video call in its tracks. The good news is, it's usually a quick software setting or driver issue that you can fix yourself.

Start with a free quick webcam test to rule out a hardware fault. If a live preview appears there but not in your app, the camera is fine and the app is the problem.

Check the Physical Privacy Shutter

First, take a close look at the bezel above your screen. Many HP Pavilion models have a tiny sliding shutter that physically blocks the camera lens for privacy. If it's slid to the side, you'll see a little plastic cover over the camera. Just slide it back the other way to uncover the lens.

Close Other Apps Using the Camera

Your camera can only be used by one program at a time. If you have another app like the Camera app or Discord running in the background, it will lock the camera. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, look for any video apps under "Processes," and end the tasks. Then try your call again.

Check Windows Camera Privacy Settings

Windows has a master switch for camera access. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Make sure "Camera access" is turned on. Then, scroll down to "Let apps access your camera" and ensure the toggle for your specific calling app (like Zoom or Microsoft Teams) is also enabled.

Test with the Built-in Camera App

Open the "Camera" app from your Start menu. If the camera works perfectly here, then the hardware is fine and the problem is isolated to your video calling software. You'll need to dive into that app's own settings to make sure it's selected the correct camera device.

Update Your Camera Drivers with HP Support Assistant

For HP laptops, the easiest way is to use the pre-installed HP Support Assistant. Open it, go to the updates section, and run a check. It will find and install the latest camera drivers specifically for your Pavilion 15 model. I've found this one-click tool often resolves detection issues faster than Windows Update.

Update Drivers Manually via Device Manager

If you prefer, you can update drivers directly. Press the Windows key, type "Device Manager," and open it. Expand the "Cameras" or "Imaging devices" section. Right-click on your HP HD Camera or similar listing and choose "Update driver." Select "Search automatically for drivers."

Reinstall the Camera Driver

If updating didn't help, a clean reinstall might. Back in Device Manager, right-click the camera device and select "Uninstall device." Check the box that says "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" if you see it. Restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall a fresh driver upon reboot.

Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP builds a useful diagnostic tool into your Pavilion. Restart your laptop and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly as it boots up. This will launch the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. You can run a system test, which includes checking the camera hardware, to rule out a physical failure.

Check for Windows Updates and Optional Drivers

Head to Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for updates." Install any available updates. After that, click "Advanced options" and then "Optional updates." Sometimes, Microsoft or HP will list newer camera drivers here that aren't installed by the standard update process.
