You want Chrome off your device, but the available options depend on where it's installed. Computers and iPhones let you uninstall it, while many Android phones only offer a way to disable the preinstalled browser. Start with your device below, then check what happens to your local browsing data.

Uninstall Chrome on Windows

On Windows 11, start by closing Google Chrome.

  1. 1.Open Start > Settings.
  2. 2.Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. 3.Find Google Chrome and select More beside it.
  4. 4.Select Uninstall, then select Uninstall again.
  5. 5.Approve the permission prompt with Yes. If Windows requests administrator credentials for a system-wide installation, enter them.
  6. 6.For an alternative on Windows 11 or Windows 10, search the taskbar for Control Panel. Open Programs > Programs and Features, right-click Google Chrome, and select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change. Complete the uninstall prompts.

Remove the Mac application through Finder

On a Mac, use Finder to remove the Chrome application. Deleting its local profile is a separate, optional step.

Quit Google Chrome.

In Finder, open Go > Applications, or open the folder where you installed Chrome.

Select Google Chrome.

Choose File > Move to Trash.

If prompted, enter the name and password of an administrator account on your Mac.

Choose Finder > Empty Trash to reclaim the application's storage.

When Android only offers Disable

Open Settings > Apps.

If the app list is behind See all apps or App info, open that option.

Select Chrome.

Tap Disable for a preinstalled copy that cannot be removed.

Complete the confirmation. Chrome stays installed but is disabled.

For a removable copy you installed yourself, open Google Play Store.

Tap your Profile icon.

Open Manage apps & devices > Manage.

Select Chrome.

Tap Uninstall.

Watch the wording: Uninstall updates restores the preinstalled version; it does not remove Chrome itself.

Delete Chrome from an iPhone or iPad

Deleting Chrome removes the app; removing only its Home Screen icon leaves it installed.

Touch and hold Chrome on the Home Screen.

Tap Remove App.

Select Delete App.

Tap Delete to confirm.

For the storage settings route, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.

Select Chrome.

Choose Delete App.

Confirm the deletion to remove the app and its related local data.

What happens to your browsing data

Removing Chrome or its local profile does not guarantee deletion of information saved in your Google Account. On iPhone and iPad, Offload App removes the application but keeps its documents and data. Choose Delete App to remove its related local data too.

For optional Mac profile cleanup, open Finder > Go > Go to Folder. This cleanup deletes local bookmarks, history, and other personal profile information.

Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome in the folder field and click Go.

Move the folders inside that location to Trash only if you want that local browsing data deleted.

Linux removal depends on the installed package

These commands remove Chrome Stable installed from Google's DEB or RPM package. Choose the command for your system.

Open a terminal.

On a Debian-based system, run sudo dpkg -r google-chrome-stable.

On an RPM-based system, run sudo rpm -e google-chrome-stable instead.

Enter your password when requested.

For a graphical alternative on Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 where App Center lists Chrome, open App Center > Manage.

Select Google Chrome.

Click Uninstall.

Enter your password to complete the removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I delete Chrome from my iPhone?

Screen Time and device management include restrictions on app deletion. To allow deletion, open Settings > Screen Time and find the Deleting Apps setting in its restrictions. Make sure it allows app deletion, then delete Chrome. For a managed device, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If management blocks removal, contact your administrator.

Can I uninstall Chrome from a Chromebook?

Google's uninstall guide covers Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and iPad, and gives no steps for removing the built-in Chrome browser from a Chromebook. Removing an extension or web app does not uninstall the browser.

Can I reinstall Chrome after removing it?

Yes. On a supported computer, visit Google's official Chrome page at https://www.google.com/chrome/ and select Download Chrome for your platform. The page also links to supported mobile versions.
