You start a Netflix show, the dialogue moves fast, and the captions are missing or in the wrong language. Netflix puts subtitle controls in the player first, then in profile language settings when you want your choices to stick.

Use the device you are watching on, then move to profile preferences or system captions only when the in-player track is not enough.

Turn on subtitles on a phone tablet or computer

This method applies when you are watching in the Netflix app on a phone or tablet, or on Netflix in a supported computer browser. The title must offer subtitles or captions in the language you want.

Open Netflix and start playing the TV show or movie.

Tap or click the screen to show the playback controls.

Select Audio & Subtitles.

Choose the subtitle or caption language shown for that title.

Select Other when you need the full language list, then apply the subtitle choice.

Use the subtitle menu on a TV remote

On smart TVs, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game consoles, and streaming media players, Netflix puts subtitles inside the playback controls.

Start playing a show or movie, then press the up or down arrow on your remote. Choose Audio & Subtitles, or select a language option shown at the bottom of the TV screen.

Pick the subtitle or caption language you want. Use Other when the first screen does not show the language list you need.

If this method fails, try the same title on a phone, tablet, or computer and open Audio & Subtitles there.

Change Netflix subtitles on Apple TV

Use Netflix’s in-player menu on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.

  1. 1.Open Netflix and start playing a movie or episode.
  2. 2.Swipe up or press the up arrow on the Apple TV remote.
  3. 3.Select Audio & Subtitles.
  4. 4.Choose the subtitle or caption language you want.
  5. 5.Select Other to see the full language list for that title.

Pick subtitles while casting Netflix

This applies when your phone or tablet controls Netflix playback on a supported cast device. Netflix's cast-compatible list is short: Chromecast 3rd generation or older that did not come with a physical remote, Google Nest Hub Smart Displays, select cast-enabled Vizio TVs, and select cast-enabled Compal TVs. Newer streaming devices that shipped with their own remote, including Chromecast with Google TV, are not on Netflix's cast list. On those, open the built-in Netflix app with the device remote and use Audio & Subtitles there instead.

Open the Netflix app on your mobile device and sign in when asked.

Tap a profile.

Tap the Cast icon in the upper-right corner.

Choose the device you want to watch on.

Start the show or movie from your phone or tablet.

Use the mobile playback controls to change the audio or subtitle settings.

Casting or mirroring is available on Netflix Standard or Premium plans, and casting also requires one of the cast-compatible devices Netflix currently lists.

Set a preferred subtitle language

On a phone or tablet, open Netflix and go to My Netflix. Tap your profile name, open Manage Profiles, choose the profile, select Audio & Subtitles, then choose the audio and subtitle languages you want. Netflix saves the new languages automatically.

From a browser, open your Netflix Account page. Go to Profiles, choose the profile, open Languages, select the Audio and subtitle languages you want, then choose Save.

On a TV or TV streaming device, start playing a show or movie and pause Netflix. Select the player controls at the bottom of the screen, choose Other, then pick the languages you want for Audio and Subtitles. Netflix saves those choices automatically.

These are profile preferences, and title availability still controls which subtitle languages appear during playback.

Choose between regular subtitles and CC

This applies when Netflix shows more than one subtitle track for the same language. The plain language track covers spoken dialogue, while the CC or SDH track adds captions for audio cues, speakers, and context.

Open Audio & Subtitles while the title is playing.

Choose a plain option such as English when you want spoken dialogue only.

Choose English (CC) when you want dialogue plus extra captions for sounds, speaker details, and context.

Check the title details page for an SDH badge before playback. SDH availability can differ by season or episode.

Netflix began adding plain original-language subtitles alongside SDH and CC on new titles starting with YOU Season 5, and says new Netflix originals will include that option in every offered language going forward.

Fix subtitles that keep resetting

Netflix documents one cause outright: subtitle and audio preferences are not saved when you watch most Kids titles from an adult profile. They are saved when you watch from a Kids profile.

Switch to an adult profile.

Play a title with a maturity rating of Teens or above.

While that title is playing, set the subtitle and audio languages you want.

Keep the title playing for 2 to 3 minutes. Netflix documents this 2 to 3 minute step for locking in a preferred audio language, and the same note says subtitle and audio preferences are what fail to save on Kids titles, so use it when either one keeps resetting.

Use device captions when Netflix tracks are not enough

On supported Android phones, press the volume button, tap More under the volume controls, choose Live Caption, then tap Done. You can also open Settings, go to Accessibility, choose Live Caption, and turn on Live Caption.

In Chrome, the path depends on your platform. On Windows or Mac, open More, go to Settings, choose Accessibility, and turn on Live Caption. On Linux, open More, Settings, Accessibility, select Captions, then turn on Live Caption. On a Chromebook, open More, Settings, Accessibility, select Manage accessibility features, then Audio and captions, and turn on Live Caption. On Windows, Mac, and Linux, use Manage languages, Add languages, and Preferred caption language for caption language settings.

On Windows 11, turn on live captions from Quick settings, then Accessibility, then Live captions, or press Windows key+Ctrl+L. You can also use Start, All apps, Accessibility, Live captions, or go through Settings, Accessibility, Captions, and the Live captions toggle.

These are generated captions from your device or browser, not Netflix subtitle tracks, so accuracy, language support, and app support depend on the platform.

Skip older subtitle tricks

Older guides mention a Netflix keyboard shortcut for subtitles, but Netflix’s current computer shortcut list does not include a subtitles or captions shortcut. Use Audio & Subtitles in the player instead.

Older Apple TV 2nd and 3rd generation instructions mention holding or pressing the center button during playback. Netflix’s current Apple TV support starts with Apple TV HD, also known as 4th generation, and later.

AirPlay and iOS Screen Mirroring are not supported ways to watch Netflix from an iPhone or iPad on a TV. If playback is going through Screen Mirroring, open Screen Mirroring on the iPhone or iPad and choose Stop Mirroring, then use a supported Netflix playback or casting method.

If an old shortcut or mirroring path fails, use the in-player Audio & Subtitles menu on a supported Netflix device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find my subtitle language on Netflix?

Netflix only shows subtitle and caption languages available for the title you are watching. Choose Other in Audio & Subtitles to see the full language list for that title.

Do Netflix subtitle preferences apply to every profile?

No. Preferred audio and subtitle languages are set per profile, so each profile needs its own language choices.

What is the difference between English and English CC on Netflix?

English covers spoken dialogue. English (CC) includes dialogue plus extra captions for sound cues, speaker details, and context.

Can I force subtitles on for an entire Netflix account?

Netflix documents its audio, subtitle, and subtitle appearance settings per profile, under Account, then Profiles, then the profile you want, so there is no single switch that applies to everyone on the account. Set preferred audio and subtitle languages on each profile instead.
