SharePlay can start inside FaceTime or keep running in an Apple Music session, so the fix depends on whether you want the feature disabled or you just want to leave what is already playing. Start with the FaceTime SharePlay switch for the cleanest iPhone setting, then use Music controls or stricter device options only when they match the problem in front of you.

Turn off SharePlay in FaceTime settings

Use this first when you want SharePlay off for FaceTime without shutting down FaceTime calls. SharePlay requires iPhone with iOS 15.1 or later, and the current iOS 26 layout puts the control under Settings > Apps.

Open Settings, then tap Apps and select FaceTime. Open SharePlay, then turn off SharePlay.

On older iOS layouts, open Settings > FaceTime, then use the same SharePlay switch.

If you want FaceTime shut down too

This is the broader FaceTime option. It prevents FaceTime calling, which blocks SharePlay inside FaceTime calls, but it also turns off FaceTime audio and video calls.

Open Settings, then tap Apps and choose FaceTime. Turn off FaceTime.

This is a FaceTime shutoff, not a complete SharePlay control for every app. If SharePlay still starts outside FaceTime, leave or end the active session from the app where it is running.

Leave an Apple Music SharePlay session

Use these steps when music is already being shared through Apple Music and you want to leave or stop the current session.

  1. 1.Open Apple Music.
  2. 2.Tap the player at the bottom of the screen.
  3. 3.Tap SharePlay.
  4. 4.Choose Leave a SharePlay music session to exit only for yourself.
  5. 5.Choose End a SharePlay music session for all participants to stop it for everyone.

Stop nearby speaker music sharing

This fixes a SharePlay music session running on HomePod, Apple TV 4K, or a third-party Bluetooth speaker from an iPhone with iOS 18 or later.

Open Music, then open Now Playing. Tap the SharePlay button at the bottom of the Now Playing screen. Tap Leave to exit the session. Tap End to stop the session for everyone.

Why deleting FaceTime is not enough

Deleting FaceTime removes the app icon, not the full calling feature. On iPhone with iOS 14 or later, FaceTime is a deletable built-in app, but FaceTime calls can still be made and received in Contacts and Phone after the app is deleted.

That makes Remove App, Delete App, and Delete cleanup choices, not reliable SharePlay controls. To stop FaceTime SharePlay, use Settings > Apps > FaceTime > SharePlay and turn off SharePlay.

Lockdown Mode is only for extreme cases

Lockdown Mode makes SharePlay unavailable, but it is built for high-risk security situations and disables or limits many features beyond SharePlay.

Open Settings, then choose Privacy & Security and select Lockdown Mode. Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode, then tap Turn On Lockdown Mode again. Tap Turn On & Restart, then enter your device passcode.

If Lockdown Mode creates more limits than you want, turn it off and use the normal SharePlay switch in FaceTime settings, then end any active session from Music.

Work or school iPhones

This applies when your iPhone is supervised and managed by an employer or school and you cannot change FaceTime behavior yourself. Apple lists the FaceTime restriction as supervised-only, so a personally owned iPhone that is merely enrolled in management cannot receive it. In that setup, an administrator can disallow FaceTime, which means users cannot place or receive FaceTime audio or video calls.

Ask your IT administrator to block FaceTime on the managed device if the goal is to prevent FaceTime-based SharePlay.

That blocks FaceTime-based SharePlay by blocking FaceTime itself, so it is a device-management restriction rather than a personal iPhone toggle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off SharePlay also turn off FaceTime?

No. Turning off SharePlay in FaceTime settings disables SharePlay while leaving FaceTime available. Turning off FaceTime is a separate, broader setting.

Why does SharePlay still appear after I deleted the FaceTime app?

Deleting the FaceTime app does not fully disable FaceTime calling. FaceTime calls can still be made and received in Contacts and Phone after the app is deleted.

Can I leave SharePlay without stopping it for everyone?

Yes. In Apple Music, choose Leave a SharePlay music session, or use Leave from the Music Now Playing SharePlay control for nearby speaker sessions.

Does Lockdown Mode turn off SharePlay?

Yes. Lockdown Mode makes SharePlay unavailable, but it also disables or limits many other features and is intended for high-risk security situations.
