Center Stage makes a Zoom video feel like it has a mind of its own when the camera keeps following movement around the room. The fix depends on whether Zoom is using Apple's Center Stage or Zoom's separate Auto-framing feature.
Start with the meeting control on iPhone or iPad, then use Apple's system video controls or Zoom's camera settings if the movement continues. The steps below cover iPhone, iPad, Mac, Zoom desktop, and the Zoom Web App.
Start with the Zoom meeting controls on iPhone or iPad
On a supported iPhone or iPad, Zoom includes a direct Center Stage control during a meeting or webinar. Start or join the Zoom session, then tap the screen to show the meeting controls.
Tap the Grid icon in the top-right corner. Tap Center Stage to turn video tracking off.
This applies to the Zoom Workplace mobile app on supported Apple devices, including compatible iPad models and iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
When the Zoom setting is the easier path
The most common cause is that Zoom's own iOS Center Stage setting is still enabled in the app.
Outside a meeting, open Profile, then tap Settings. Go to Video & effects, tap Appearance, open Video & effects, then switch off iOS Center Stage.
During a meeting, tap More, open Settings, go to Video & effects, then turn off iOS Center Stage.
Use iPad Control Center for Apple Center Stage
Apple also controls Center Stage from iPadOS while Zoom is actively using the camera. Start or join the Zoom call, then open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner.
Tap Zoom Controls at the top of Control Center, then tap Center Stage to turn it off. On iPadOS 17 or earlier, tap Video Effects instead, then tap Center Stage.
If this method fails, use Zoom's in-meeting Grid icon or the Zoom Video & effects setting instead.
Turn it off from iPhone Control Center
Use the system toggle when Zoom is using the front camera on a supported iPhone.
- 1.Start or join the Zoom call.
- 2.Open Control Center.
- 3.Tap Zoom, or tap the active third-party video conferencing app name.
- 4.Tap Center Stage to turn it off.
Stop Center Stage on a Mac
This fixes Center Stage when Zoom is using Apple's Mac video effects.
Start or join the Zoom call with video turned on.
On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, click the green camera icon or Video menu in the Apple menu bar.
Click Center Stage to turn it off.
On macOS Ventura 13 or macOS Monterey 12, click Control Center in the Apple menu bar, click Video Effects, then click Center Stage.
When your iPhone is acting as the Mac camera
The most common cause on a Mac is that Zoom is using your iPhone through Continuity Camera, which brings Center Stage into the call.
To stop that camera from being available on the Mac, open Settings on the iPhone. Go to General, then AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff, and turn off Continuity Camera.
During the call, tap Pause on the iPhone screen to pause the camera feed. Tap Disconnect to remove it from the active Zoom session.
Switch Zoom to a different camera
Changing cameras avoids Center Stage when another webcam is available.
- 1.Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- 2.Click your profile picture, then open Settings.
- 3.Go to Video & effects.
- 4.Choose a different camera from the Camera control or drop-down.
- 5.During a meeting, click the arrow next to Start Video or Stop Video, then choose another camera under Select a Camera.
Turn off Zoom Auto-framing instead
Sometimes the movement is not Apple Center Stage. Zoom's own Auto-framing feature also keeps your face centered automatically, and it has separate controls.
In the Zoom desktop app, sign in and go to Home, Settings, Video & effects. You can also click your profile picture, then open Settings. Zoom documents two labels for the next step, and which one you see depends on your app version. Zoom's how-to steps say to click the Camera tab, then click the Auto-framing toggle to turn it off. The redesigned video settings that shipped in Zoom Workplace 6.6.5 for Windows and macOS renamed that tab to Video and list Auto-framing under Appearance. Open whichever of the two you see, then switch off Auto-framing.
From the join preview screen, open the Select a camera drop-down and deselect Auto-frame my video. During a meeting, click the arrow next to Start Video or Stop Video, then deselect Auto-frame my video.
In the Zoom Web App, click the caret next to the Video icon and disable auto-framing, or open Video & effects settings and turn off auto-framing there.
Update Zoom and skip older menu paths
Older guides point to More, Video Settings, and Center Stage, but that exact path is not the current supported Zoom route. Use the in-meeting Grid icon, the newer More, Settings, Video & effects path, or Apple's system video controls instead.
If the current controls are missing, update or reinstall Zoom from the official Download Center. On iPhone or iPad, use the App Store, search for Zoom Workplace, then tap GET or OPEN.
For a work or school device, your organization controls Zoom Auto-framing on managed Windows or macOS deployments. If the setting keeps returning after you turn it off, contact your IT admin.
If this method fails, switch to a non-Center Stage camera in Zoom or turn off Continuity Camera on the iPhone when the Mac is using it as the webcam.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Zoom camera keep following me?
It is usually Apple Center Stage on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Mac camera. Zoom Auto-framing creates a similar automatic centering effect, so check both controls.
Can I turn off Center Stage before joining a Zoom meeting?
On supported iOS devices, use Profile > Settings > Video & effects > Appearance > Video & effects > iOS Center Stage when that setting appears. On desktop, turn off Zoom Auto-framing from the join preview screen.
Does turning off Zoom Auto-framing turn off Apple Center Stage?
No. Zoom Auto-framing and Apple Center Stage are separate features. Use Zoom's Center Stage control or Apple's Control Center or Video menu for Apple Center Stage.
Why do I not see Center Stage in Zoom?
The control appears only on supported Apple devices and versions. Update Zoom Workplace from the official Zoom Download Center or the App Store if your supported device does not show the current controls.
