Your Acer laptop screen is black, flickering, or showing an image that just looks wrong. Start with the quick power and keyboard checks below, then jump to the fix that matches your screen. The Windows settings paths apply to Windows 11; Acer Chromebook fixes have their own section near the end.

Bring a blank screen back to life

Start here for power trouble, a switched-off screen, or a stalled Windows graphics driver.

Connect your Acer AC adapter firmly to the laptop and a working outlet. Then disconnect docks, USB devices, external drives, and other peripherals. Clear anything blocking the cooling vents.

Check your model’s manual for its screen-off shortcut. Acer commonly uses Fn + F6, but the combination depends on the model.

Press the screen-off shortcut listed for your model. On a Windows laptop, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Listen for a beep or watch for a brief flicker during the reset.

Press Windows + P to open the projection controls. If the menu is visible, select the output mode you need. If the menu stays invisible, press P again. Press Enter to select the next mode.

If the computer remains completely unresponsive, hold Power for 20 seconds. A forced shutdown risks losing unsaved work.

Start the laptop again. If the black screen shows only a cursor, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Right-click Windows Explorer and select Restart.

If Windows Explorer is absent, select Run new task. Older Task Manager layouts place this command under File.

Enter explorer.exe. Press Enter.

Reset the laptop’s power system

Acer’s battery reset addresses power-management faults and startup freezes.

  1. 1.Shut down the laptop completely.
  2. 2.Unplug the AC adapter.
  3. 3.Disconnect all peripherals.
  4. 4.Hold Power for at least 30 seconds.
  5. 5.Reconnect the adapter.
  6. 6.Turn the laptop on.

Correct a dim, stretched, or discolored image

For a dim built-in screen, raise the slider under Settings > System > Display > Brightness. If brightness shifts with the displayed content and your laptop offers the control, set Change brightness based on content to Off.

For stretched, blurry, oversized, or undersized output, select the affected screen under Settings > System > Display. Under Scale & layout, choose the recommended Scale and Display resolution. For a sideways image, set Display orientation to the intended orientation.

For a warm tint, turn off Night light under Settings > System > Display > Night light. To keep the effect with different settings, adjust Strength and Schedule night light.

For unintended grayscale or altered colors, turn off Color filters under Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. For an unintended contrast theme, choose None under Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes, then select Apply. If the desktop is magnified, press Windows + Esc to close Magnifier.

Use an external monitor to narrow down the problem

If the built-in screen stays blank, test a working external monitor for access to Windows and its settings. An external image alone does not identify which internal component has failed.

Turn off the laptop. Connect a working external monitor to a compatible video output.

Restart the laptop. Check for an image on the external screen. On models whose manual assigns display selection to Fn + F5, press that combination to cycle between the internal and external displays.

If the external monitor is the problem, connect it directly to the laptop to bypass a dock or adapter where possible. Disconnect any additional external displays so you test one at a time. Reseat the video cable. Try a replacement cable if the connection still fails.

Test another compatible laptop video output. Connect the monitor to another computer to help isolate the fault. For a connected screen that Windows has not detected, select Detect under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays.

Find the cause of screen flickering

Display-driver faults and incompatible apps are the main causes to investigate when the screen flickers. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Watch whether Task Manager flickers with the desktop. If it does, follow the driver steps in the next section. If it stays steady while the desktop flickers, follow the app steps here.

Update the suspect app through Microsoft Store or its publisher. If flickering continues, find the app under Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Open the app’s menu.

Select Uninstall. Restart the laptop. Check whether the flickering has stopped.

To reinstall a Store app, open Microsoft Store > Library. Select the app. Select Install.

Update or roll back the display driver

Use driver updates, rollback, or reinstallation for display problems caused by graphics software. Select Check for updates under Settings > Windows Update.

Open Advanced options > Optional updates. Optional drivers appear only when offered for your hardware.

Select an applicable display driver. Choose Download and install. Restart the laptop.

If you still need a graphics driver, identify your laptop on Acer’s Drivers and Manuals page using its Serial Number, SNID, or model. Start with Acer’s recommended laptop driver.

Select your operating system. Download the matching graphics driver.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Device Manager > Display adapters to roll it back instead. Rollback requires administrator rights and a retained previous driver.

Right-click the affected graphics adapter and select Properties. Hybrid-graphics laptops can list multiple adapters.

Select Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab. Select Yes. Restart the laptop after the rollback.

If updating or rolling back does not resolve the problem, select Uninstall Device under the affected adapter’s Properties > Driver. Reinstalling the driver also requires administrator rights.

Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if that checkbox is offered. Confirm the uninstall. Restart the laptop. Windows attempts to reinstall the driver.

Use recovery when Windows will not display correctly

Use recovery when a startup failure or recent software change prevents you from reaching a usable desktop. Have your BitLocker recovery key ready if the laptop is encrypted.

With Settings accessible, select Restart now under Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup. Windows also supports automatic recovery entry after repeated startup failures.

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 3 or F3 for Enable low-resolution video to test lower display settings with the current driver. Alternatively, press 4 or F4 for Enable Safe Mode.

If the problem followed a system change, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore in recovery. Choose an existing restore point from before the problem.

For a Windows startup failure, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart instead. Enter the BitLocker recovery key if requested. Back up your data before using a Windows reset as the last software-recovery step.

To reset from recovery, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything. Keeping files still removes apps and settings; removing everything also deletes your personal files. Select Cloud download or Local reinstall.

Restore an Acer Chromebook display

On an Acer Chromebook, select the time. Open Settings > Device > Displays. Select Built-in Display or the connected monitor to access its available display controls.

For incorrect display sizing, press Ctrl + Shift + 0 to restore the default screen resolution. For an accidentally rotated screen, press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate. Connect the Chromebook to Wi-Fi before checking for an update. Select the time.

Select Check for updates under Settings > About ChromeOS. Install an offered update. Restart the Chromebook.

If the display problem persists, check your model’s hardware-reset instructions. The following Refresh and Power procedure applies to most Chromebooks, with model exceptions.

Back up needed files before the hardware reset. It can remove some files from Downloads.

Turn off the Chromebook. While holding Refresh, tap Power. Release Refresh after startup begins.

Tip: Ctrl + Alt + Z toggles ChromeVox spoken feedback to help you navigate; it does not repair the display.

Know when to contact Acer

Persistent faults, flickering before Windows loads, and failed pixels need model-specific support.

  1. 1.On an Intel-graphics Acer laptop, enter BIOS using your model’s documented startup key. Check for flicker there; if it also occurs in BIOS, contact Acer.
  2. 2.If an external display works but the built-in screen stays blank, identify your exact laptop on Acer’s Drivers and Manuals page. Open BIOS/Firmware and download an applicable BIOS update. Follow its included instructions, and never use another model’s firmware.
  3. 3.For failed pixels, compare the defects with Acer’s policy for your panel and region. Acer states that failed pixels cannot be repaired; panel-replacement eligibility depends on the policy and coverage.
  4. 4.Locate your Serial Number or SNID, open Contact Acer, and check Warranty Inquiry. Use the offered phone or chat option, or Repair My Acer, to arrange service. Options vary by region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the BitLocker recovery key if I cannot use the laptop screen?

On another device, open Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery-key page and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the laptop. Match the key to the displayed key ID. For a work or school account, use your organization’s recovery route or contact IT. The key unlocks recovery; it does not repair the display.

Can I use the battery-reset hole instead of holding Power?

Only if your model’s manual identifies a Battery Reset pinhole. Shut down, unplug the charger, and gently press the internal button with a paperclip for 10–15 seconds. Release it, then power on. Never insert objects into unidentified openings.

Why does my screen keep turning off or dimming while the laptop is on?

Check Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and review Turn my screen off after. Under Energy saver, review Lower screen brightness when using energy saver. Earlier Windows 11 builds use different power-setting labels.

Will Acer’s Alt + F10 recovery shortcut work with Windows 11?

Yes. Acer documents it for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Turn on the laptop and press Alt + F10 when the Acer logo appears. The shortcut requires working recovery functionality and a visible recovery screen. Back up before choosing Troubleshoot > Reset this PC; Keep my files still removes apps and settings.
