Getting your new Nothing Phone 2a set up with all your old data is a straightforward process. Google's backup system and the built-in transfer tools in Nothing OS make it easy, whether you're moving from another Android phone or making the switch from an iPhone.

Start the Transfer During Initial Setup

The absolute best time to move your data is when you first power on your Phone 2a. After you select your language and connect to Wi-Fi, you'll hit the "Copy apps & data" screen. Tap Next here to begin. You'll be presented with a few options, including copying directly from your old device or restoring from a Google cloud backup.

If you have your old Android phone handy, choose "Copy from Android phone." On your old device, open the Google app and say "set up my device," or navigate to Settings > Google > Set up & restore > Set up nearby device. Your Phone 2a will then find it and create a secure connection to start the transfer wirelessly.

Use a USB Cable for a Fast, Complete Move

For the most reliable and comprehensive transfer, I'd recommend using a USB cable. You'll need a USB-C to USB-C cable and possibly an adapter if your old phone has a different port. When you connect the two phones during the setup process, your Nothing Phone 2a will detect the old one and guide you through selecting exactly what to copy over.

This method is great because it doesn't rely on Wi-Fi speed and can move almost everything: your apps, call history, text messages, photos, videos, device settings, and even some app data. It's often the most thorough way to get your new phone feeling like home right away.

Restore from a Google One Backup

Don't have your old phone anymore? No problem, as long as you had backups enabled. During setup on your Phone 2a, after signing into your Google account, you'll be shown a list of available backups from your previous devices. Just pick the most recent one.

Your apps will begin reinstalling from the Play Store, and your backed-up settings, call history, SMS messages, and photos will download. To check if your old phone was backing up, go to Settings > Google > Backup on that device. It should show a recent backup time and date.

Switching from an iPhone to Your Phone 2a

If you're coming from an iPhone, the process is still simple. During the "Copy apps & data" step on your Nothing Phone 2a, select "iPhone" as your source. You'll be prompted to download the "Switch to Android" app from the App Store on your iPhone.

Open that app, follow the instructions to connect via QR code, and choose what you want to bring over. Your contacts, calendar events, photos, and videos will transfer. Since iOS apps don't work on Android, you'll need to download fresh versions from the Google Play Store, but many will restore your data once you log in.

Let Your Google Account Handle the Sync

A huge amount of your important information syncs automatically through your Google account. As soon as you sign in on your Nothing Phone 2a, your contacts, calendar, Chrome bookmarks and history, Gmail, and notes from Google Keep will appear. You can manage what's syncing by going to Settings > Accounts & sync > Google on your new phone.

Moving WhatsApp Chats and Other App Data

For WhatsApp, the transfer between Android phones is built-in. On your old Android phone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer, and follow the prompts. To move chats from an iPhone, you'll need to use WhatsApp's official "Move to Android" feature within the app's settings, which requires a cable connection during the Phone 2a's setup.

For other apps like Signal or specific games, check within each app's settings for a backup or transfer option. Many games save your progress to Google Play Games automatically, so just log into the same account on your new device.

Final Steps After Everything is Moved

Once the transfer is complete, take a few minutes to scroll through your apps, check your photo gallery, and open key apps to ensure your data is there. Log into any apps that require separate authentication, like social media or banking apps.

When you're confident everything is safely on your new Nothing Phone 2a, it's a good security practice to perform a factory reset on your old phone before you sell, trade, or recycle it. You can usually find this option under Settings > System > Reset options.
