Your FaceTime call is on your iPhone, but you want to keep talking on your Mac. Handoff moves the active audio or video call between them without ending it. You need iOS 16 or later, macOS Ventura 13 or later, and the same Apple Account on both devices. Start with the transfer notification, then work through the settings below if it is missing.
Move the call using the Mac notification
Keep your iPhone nearby and use the Mac’s Handoff notification to transfer the call.
- 1.Leave the FaceTime call open on your unlocked iPhone.
- 2.On your Mac, click Move Call to This Mac in the Handoff notification.
- 3.Complete any confirmation shown in FaceTime to move the call to your Mac.
Enable Handoff if the transfer prompt is missing
Handoff turned off on either device blocks the transfer feature.
Keep your iPhone and Mac within 30 feet (10 meters).
Turn on Wi-Fi on both devices.
Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. They must use the same Apple Account for iCloud, but they do not have to join the same Wi-Fi network.
On your iPhone, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity. Older compatible releases use the section name AirPlay & Handoff.
Turn on Handoff.
On your Mac, choose the Apple menu > System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity. Other compatible releases use AirDrop & Handoff.
Turn on Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices. This enables the feature; it does not move the call.
Try the Mac’s Move Call to This Mac notification again, or use the menu-bar route below.
Use the FaceTime menu-bar button instead
The menu-bar button gives you a direct transfer route without using the notification.
During the iPhone call, click the FaceTime button in your Mac’s menu bar.
Click Switch in the menu.
Click Switch in the FaceTime window to complete the transfer.
Check your accounts and software
Your system Apple Account and your FaceTime sign-in both matter. Membership in the same Family Sharing group does not satisfy Handoff’s same-account requirement.
On an unsigned-in iPhone, open Settings > Apple Account > Sign in Manually.
Enter your Apple Account credentials.
Enter the verification code if requested.
On an unsigned-in Mac, choose the Apple menu > System Settings > Sign in.
Sign in with the same Apple Account as your iPhone.
Open FaceTime on the Mac. Its app sign-in is separate from the Mac’s system account.
If FaceTime uses a different account, choose FaceTime > Settings > General > Sign Out.
At the sign-in screen, enter the Apple Account email address or phone number used on your iPhone.
Click Sign In.
Enter your password.
Click Sign In again.
FaceTime call transfer requires iOS 16 or later and macOS Ventura 13 or later. Enabling general Handoff on macOS Monterey 12 or earlier does not add it. The System Preferences path in older tutorials belongs to those older releases; compatible Macs use System Settings.
Before updating, back up your iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to power.
Connect it to Wi-Fi.
Open Settings > General > Software Update.
If an update is available, tap Download and Install to begin the onscreen update process.
Back up your Mac before updating it.
Choose the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
Install the compatible update offered. Finish updates before attempting another transfer.
If matching accounts and compatible software do not resolve the problem, check FaceTime access and Screen Time restrictions next.
Restore access to FaceTime
On your iPhone, open Settings > Apps > FaceTime.
Turn on FaceTime.
Complete any sign-in prompt with the Apple Account used on your Mac.
Select your FaceTime contact information under You can be reached by FaceTime at.
When FaceTime settings or functionality are unavailable, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. On iOS 27, tap Other Features; earlier releases use Allowed Apps & Features.
Turn on Camera.
Turn on FaceTime if it appears in the list.
If these controls require a Screen Time passcode you do not have, ask your parent or the passcode holder to change them.
Continue on the Mac when Handoff is unavailable
An existing FaceTime link lets you join the conversation on your Mac.
Open the existing link’s tile in your Mac’s FaceTime app.
Click Join FaceTime.
Click Join to enter the session.
Without a usable link, start a replacement call from the Mac. This ends the original call and begins a new one.
End the iPhone call.
Open FaceTime on the Mac.
Click New Call.
Enter the contact’s name, number, or email.
Press Return.
For video, click the FaceTime Video Call button.
For audio, open the menu beside the FaceTime Video Call button.
Choose FaceTime Audio.
If the replacement call fails, check your internet connection and FaceTime sign-in. Your Mac needs a microphone for calls and a camera for video.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to enable Calls on Other Devices?
No. Calls on Other Devices, Calls from iPhone, and Wi-Fi Calling handle cellular-call relay. They are not FaceTime Handoff prerequisites.
Does FaceTime Handoff require an Apple silicon Mac?
No. Apple silicon is not a general requirement for FaceTime Handoff. A compatible Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later supports the feature; macOS 27 has separate hardware requirements.
Can Siri move my existing FaceTime call to my Mac?
Apple’s transfer steps use the Mac’s Move Call to This Mac notification or the menu-bar Switch button, not a Siri command. After you end the iPhone call, Siri can start a replacement call on the Mac with a request such as “FaceTime mom.”
What if Handoff is blocked on a work or school device?
Ask your device administrator to allow Handoff on the iPhone and Mac, and FaceTime on the iPhone if it is restricted. The management settings depend on the service your organization uses.
