Can't find a sign-out button in Outlook? On your phone or computer, disconnecting a mailbox means removing its account from the app. Here's the account-removal path for each version, plus how to end browser sessions and sign out remotely.

Remove your account on iPhone or Android

Outlook uses the same account-removal path on Android, iPhone, and iPad.

Open Settings in Outlook, then tap Accounts. Select the email account you want to disconnect, then tap Remove Account.

Repeat those steps for each account you want removed. If account removal fails, use the remote sign-out method below for a personal Microsoft account. For a work or school account, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to revoke your sessions.

Disconnect your account in new Outlook for Windows

This removes the Outlook connection and offline cache while keeping your email provider account intact.

Open View > View settings, or use File > Account info. Then go to Accounts and open Your accounts. Under Email accounts, select Manage beside your account. Under Account details, select Remove.

For a non-Microsoft account, choose the device-only removal option to disconnect it just from this computer. The Remove from all devices option carries a risk of permanently deleting calendar entries or other items stored only in Microsoft Cloud.

Clear a mailbox from classic Outlook

The Office sign-out control manages your Office identity and licensing, so disconnecting a configured mailbox requires account removal.

Open File in classic Outlook, then select Account Settings. Choose Account Settings again, then select the email account you want to disconnect. Click Remove and confirm with Yes.

That removes the account's downloaded cached content. Your account with the email provider remains.

Removing the final account requires a new data-storage location. These steps apply to classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021.

Disconnect a mailbox on your Mac

Use the account-management menu in the current Outlook for Mac interface.

  1. 1.Open Tools > Accounts.
  2. 2.Select the email account you want to remove.
  3. 3.Choose Manage > Remove Account.
  4. 4.Select Continue.

End your Outlook browser session

Outlook.com and Hotmail have a regular browser sign-out option. Select your account picture or initials in the upper corner of the inbox.

Choose Sign out. Close all browser windows afterward.

If your account picture is missing, check whether an ad blocker is hiding it. For manual sign-out, open Microsoft's Outlook.com sign-out page and select the Sign out button beneath its manual-sign-out advice. Close all browser windows afterward.

Browser sign-out ends that web session. It does not remotely sign you out of installed Outlook apps.

Sign out remotely from a personal Microsoft account

Sign in to your Microsoft account security dashboard, including when you need to end sessions on a device you can't access.

Open Advanced security options, then scroll to Sign out everywhere. Select Sign out. Allow up to 24 hours for sign-out across browsers and apps; Xbox consoles are excluded.

Use this option for personal Microsoft accounts, including Outlook.com and Hotmail; work or school accounts require a different procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign out of work or school Outlook in a browser?

Select Account manager in Outlook's navigation header, then select Sign out.

Can I just uninstall Outlook to sign out?

Uninstalling removes the app but does not guarantee that account sessions are revoked. Microsoft notes that accounts in new Outlook for Windows are subject to automatic addition after reinstallation. Use account removal to disconnect your mailbox.

How do I sign out of a work or school Outlook account remotely?

Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to revoke your sessions. An administrator with the required permissions opens the Microsoft 365 admin center, selects Users > Active users, selects your user, then opens Account > Sign out of all sessions. Allow time for the change to take effect; sign-out is not guaranteed to be immediate.

Can I protect Outlook without removing my account?

Press Windows+L on Windows or Control+Command+Q on a Mac to lock your computer. Locking protects local access while keeping your Outlook accounts configured. Work Offline only controls synchronization; it does not sign you out.
