Trying to send a private message on Roblox, but stuck finding the right chat or getting past a permission block? Use a whisper to reach someone in your game, or open a friend conversation in Chat. Here’s how to start either conversation and sort out the settings that control access.

Send a whisper in your game

A whisper won’t work if you and the recipient are in different servers.

Join the recipient’s server first. Both accounts must meet the age, communication, and parental-permission requirements for private chat.

Open chat by pressing / on your keyboard or selecting the chat icon at the top left.

Enter /w @Username or /w DisplayName to enter whisper mode for that player. The longer command /whisper also works.

Type your message in the whisper channel.

Press Enter or Return to send it.

The experience must have whisper commands enabled. Its creator controls those commands, so account settings cannot switch on a command the creator has disabled.

Message a friend on the Roblox website

On the desktop website, eligible friends with age-checked accounts can use the friend-chat box.

  1. 1.Expand the gray chat box at the lower right of the Roblox website.
  2. 2.Select your friend, using Search to find them when needed.
  3. 3.Type your message in Send a Message.
  4. 4.Press Enter to send it.

Chat from your phone or tablet

From Home in the iOS or Android app, select Chat. Some regions still label this tab Party. Friend chat requires an eligible, age-checked account aged 9 or older.

Open an existing conversation to message that friend.

For a new conversation, select +.

Choose the friend you want to message.

Keep a private conversation going while you play

Use friend chat to talk while playing without relying on the experience’s whisper channel. A group conversation or Party reaches the participating friends, so it isn’t a one-to-one message.

Without an active Party, open the hamburger menu inside the game.

Select Chat.

With an active Party, select the Party icon in the top menu to open Friends Chat.

To create a group text conversation, open Chat.

Select +.

Choose up to five friends. That makes a group of up to six people including you.

Select Create.

If you receive a group invitation, select Accept to participate.

For a Party that continues during and between games, open Chat.

Select Start Party.

Choose your friends.

Select Start. Alternatively, select Start at the upper right of an existing friend or group conversation.

To accept a Party invitation, select Join in its notification.

For a missed invitation, open Chat.

Find the group with an active Party.

Select Join.

Check why private messages are blocked

Restricted communication permissions stop private messages even after you’ve added the recipient.

For friend text chat, open Settings > Privacy & content maturity > Communication > Chat and Party with friends.

Choose All friends or Trusted friends from the options available for your account’s age and region. No one disables Party Chat.

For in-game whispers, open Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Communication > Experience chat.

Review the Experience chat and Direct chat controls. Roblox requires an age check first, and younger users need parental consent to turn on Direct chat.

The wording differs between accounts. Roblox also uses Game chat and Game direct chat, and some accounts show Privacy & content maturity for the privacy menu.

If Party invitations are blocked, open Settings > Privacy & content maturity > Communication > Party.

Set Who can add you to a 1:1 Party to Friends.

Set Who can add you to a group Party to Friends.

If you blocked the recipient, open Settings > Privacy & content maturity > Blocked users.

Select Unblock beside their name.

Select Save. A parent-blocked user requires a parental request instead.

If you haven’t added the person as a friend, search their username.

Select People.

Open their profile.

Select Add Friend. The recipient must accept, and friendship alone does not guarantee chat access.

Complete the age check for chat access

An age check clears the age-check requirement for eligible chat; communication permissions still apply.

On desktop, open Settings using the gear icon.

On mobile, open More (...) > Settings.

Open Account info > Age Group > Continue with selfie.

Follow the capture prompts to complete facial age estimation.

For the ID alternative, open Settings > Account Info. This option requires an eligible account aged 13 or older, an accepted government-issued photo ID, and a camera-equipped mobile device.

Select Continue with ID beneath your birthday.

Allow camera access.

Photograph your ID, including its back when requested.

Take the identity-confirmation photo.

Help a child access permitted private chats

Use a linked parent account when a child’s private chat requires parental approval. Outside-game chat is disabled under age 9; ages 9–12 use trusted-friend chat.

To link a parent, open Settings > Parental Controls > Add parent on the child’s account.

Follow the parent-verification flow.

Select Agree.

For in-game private chat, open Settings > Parental Controls > Settings you manage > Communication > Experience chat (in-game chat) in the linked parent account.

Turn Direct chat on. The child must also be age-checked.

For friend conversations, open Settings > Parental Controls in the parent account.

Select the child.

Open Settings you manage > Communication > Chat and party with friends.

Choose the permitted friends audience.

To request trusted friendship for an under-13 user, open the friend’s profile.

Select the three-dot menu > Add trusted friend > Add > Ask now.

For the parent’s approval, the linked parent approves the request from Pending requests in Parental Controls. The recipient must accept after the required approvals. When both users are under 13, both parents must approve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I use the old profile Message button or reply to Inbox conversations?

Roblox retired user-to-user Inbox messaging on October 29, 2024. Old conversations remain read-only, and the old profile Message route no longer sends user messages. Use eligible friend chats instead.

Can I reopen a whisper without typing the command again?

Yes. When the experience shows channel tabs, select the tab displaying the other player’s username and compose your message there. Creators must enable these tabs; they are disabled by default.

Are Roblox private messages secret from Roblox?

No. Private chat limits the player audience, but trusted-friend conversations remain monitored by Roblox.

Does a private server make every message private to one player?

No. A private server alone does not make a message one-to-one. Use a whisper or a conversation with one friend to address a single recipient.
