Screen recording on your Google Pixel 9a is a built-in feature that's ready to go. It's perfect for capturing a tricky process to show a friend, saving a memorable video call, or creating a quick tutorial. The tool is integrated right into your phone's system, so you don't need to download anything extra to get started.

Access the Screen Recorder from Quick Settings

Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to pull down the full Quick Settings panel. Look for a tile labeled Screen record. If you don't see it immediately, tap the Edit or pencil icon at the bottom of the panel.

This lets you drag the Screen record tile from the available options up into your active Quick Settings. Once it's there, you can tap it anytime to begin the recording process.

Start Your First Recording

Tap the Screen record tile. A small menu will pop up from the bottom of your screen. Here, you can choose your audio source before you begin. Your options are Device audio (captures game sounds and app audio), Device audio and microphone, or Microphone only.

You can also toggle Show touches on screen, which is incredibly helpful if you're making a guide. Once your settings are ready, tap Start. After a three-second countdown, everything on your display is being recorded.

Record Your Voice with the Screen

For narrated tutorials or commentary, you'll want to capture your voice. Simply select "Device audio and microphone" in the pop-up menu before hitting start. This way, the recording will include both the sounds from your Pixel 9a and your voice through the microphone.

Just be mindful of your background noise, as the microphone will pick that up too. I find this setting is the most useful for creating clear, instructive videos.

How to Stop and Save the Recording

When you're finished, swipe down from the top to see your notifications. You'll find a persistent notification that says "Screen recording in progress." Tap the Stop button on this notification.

Alternatively, you can tap the small red recording indicator that floats on the edge of your screen. The video will process for a moment and then save automatically to your Google Photos library.

Find and Trim Your Video

Open the Google Photos app on your Pixel 9a. Your screen recording will be in your library, usually near the top if you just took it. Tap on the video to play it, then select the Edit button (it looks like a slider icon).

Use the trim tool at the bottom to cut off the beginning and end, like the countdown or the moment you fumbled to stop the recording. Google Photos also lets you adjust brightness, add filters, or crop the video if needed.

Change Video Quality and Settings

If you need to adjust the resolution or frame rate, long-press the Screen record tile in your Quick Settings. This will take you directly to the screen recorder's settings page. Here, you can choose between different quality levels.

Higher resolution and frame rate look smoother but create much larger files. For most everyday recordings, the default settings on the Pixel 9a are perfectly fine and balance quality with file size.

What You Can't Record on Your Pixel

Due to copyright protection, most premium video streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, or Max will block screen recording. You'll typically just see a black screen in the recording where the video should be.

Similarly, secure apps for banking or digital payments often disable recording for your safety. For virtually everything else, browsing the web, using social media, or playing games, the recorder will work without any issue.

Share Your Screen Recording Easily

Once your video is ready in Google Photos, tap the Share button. You can send it directly via Messages, Gmail, or WhatsApp. For wider sharing, you can upload it to platforms like YouTube, TikTok, or Google Drive right from the share sheet.

If the file is very long and too large to send via text, Google Photos can create a shareable link for you, or you can use the edit tool to trim it down to just the essential part.

Using Google Play Games for Gameplay

If your main goal is recording mobile games, the Google Play Games app offers a tailored experience. Open the app, go to your profile, and look for the Record gameplay settings. You can enable features like a front-camera overlay.

This method is often optimized to minimize performance impact on your Pixel 9a's Tensor G4 chip, which can help prevent lag during intensive gaming sessions.

Consider a Third-Party App for Advanced Features

The built-in tool covers the basics, but if you need features like live drawing, scheduled recordings, or more advanced editing, check the Play Store. Apps like AZ Screen Recorder have a strong reputation.

They offer extensive customization, though they do require a few more permissions during setup. For most users, the native screen recorder on the Pixel 9a is more than capable and wonderfully simple to use.
